Let's open a Comfort Food Cafe - what do you want on the menu?

Chef Boyardee Beef Ravioli, in a can, the original and the best. Heated in a double boiler.
Sardines on toast.
Spaghetti Carbonara. Nothing fancy, just eggs, spaghetti and bacon. You can’t find it around here for love nor money.
Patty Melt, made properly with a leftover hamburger patty cooked the day before. Not sold anymore due to health and safety.
One condition, nothing from a microwave.

Since a number of things have been mentioned that are regular full meals rather than comfort-food snack type things, I demand that the cafe cater to my addiction to noodles. :grinning: It must have:

  • Spaghettini, with or without meatballs, but with mushrooms sauteed in garlic butter, a deeply mellow pasta sauce, and lots of fresh grated Parmesan.

  • Singapore noodles (thin curried noodles with shrimp, onion, pork, and lots of other stuff).

  • Ramen noodles with sliced grilled pork, sliced mushrooms, grilled onion and peppers, and fresh green onion.

  • Beef Stroganoff over flat egg noodles.

Here, too. Give me a steady diet of noodles and spuds in all their glorious variations, and I will forsake all else. If I ever had to go on a starch-restricted diet, I would jump off a cliff!

A weekday staple. Hit or miss I recall I think it depended on the beef. Would definitely revisit this one.

Totally! A thick sliced in browned butter.

Craving constantly!

How about a platter? Fried fresh plump oysters, collards and red beans rice &sausage.

Graham crackers and milk needs to be there as an appetizer. Or dessert, I don’t care. Just put it on the menu.

Bagels, too.

Why limit it to just that? I suggest the Comfort Food Cafe have a whole menu section for Dim Sum! In many ways it’s the very essence of a classic comfort food. I sometimes prepare frozen dumplings in a combined frying+steaming technique that makes a great snack food, with hot sauce and soy for dipping.

Looks like the Comfort Food Cafe menu is getting totally out of control. An overly extensive menu is the bane of any restaurant. The place will be broke before it even opens!

What, no peas???

Ground beef patty, topped with grilled onions.

The mac-and-cheese entry should have options for “with ground beef” and “with tuna”.

Cornbread drenched in butter.

Who knew there was so much comforting food!!

All freshly baked and still warm from the oven, of course! There are times I could make a meal on freshly baked bread and butter.

This was the extent of my Polish grandmother’s “Italian” cooking. Haven’t had any in eons, but every time I ate it, I thought of her. Definitely comforting!

Surprisingly easy to make. Once you have the bun part right, which only takes one or two tries, the filling is just any meat and/or anything you want, really, and a good sauce. This basic mantou recipe was where I started:

Crab dip served on warm sourdough slices

Spinach dip in a breadbowl

homemade tacos;
flour tortillas fried in crisco cooking oil
hamburger, browned and drained of fat, with McCormick brand taco seasoning mix
diced cucumbers, onions, tomatoes
chopped olives
coarsely chopped iceberg lettuce
grated colby jack cheese
LaVictoria green sauce
sour cream
12 oz can of Pepsi, glass with ice cubes optional

I agree, there’s something strangely appealing about it. I normally can’t stand most canned foods, but I always have this stuff around for a quick meal in a pinch, with lots of parmesan. I find it heats well in the microwave in a covered casserole dish. It used to be a staple when camping.

The only place around here that makes it is my favourite boutique Italian food store. Their version also has olive oil and cream, is loaded with garlic, and the bacon is Canadian bacon. It’s delicious. :yum: I should have mentioned it in my list of required noodle dishes!

For real, that leads to antipasto and a bottle of wine

Not in the tuna casserole of my youth. They did make an appearance alternate Fridays in creamed tuna on toast.

(Interesting id/post combination.)

Came to post this! Nanner pudding… yum. Fixes what ails ya.

Also, chicken and dumplings
Tuna casserole with noodles and crumbled potato chips on top
Matzo ball soup (with not much chicken and veggies)
Cheese grits

I love this thread.

ETA. Just saw this.

Yes. (Hold the parmesan. Too exotic for me.)

Stouffer’s creamed chipped beef is pretty darned good. Super easy, needless to say.

I like mine with bacon, rather than the hambone.

On the side – B&M Brown Bread. I like the raisin variety, slathered with butter. Comes in a can, and is hard to find. I was told years ago that Jewel stocks it, but only around the holidays. I’ll have to look for it and buy a can or two for the pantry.

Ok, where is this place? I’m needing some of these foods right now! It’s a hole in the wall in a tiny strip mall next to a laundromat, right? Or maybe next to a hair salon.

Or is it free standing like Guv’s? I spent a lot of time at Guv’s while at UMaine. The menu looks much smaller than I remember it.

Maybe it’s in an old house. And there are some tables on the front porch.
