Let's play a role-playing game

You can try hiding, but there don’t seem to be any decent hiding places.

Let me do a quick prayer for protection from evil.

Either I hear pack mules, or there are some Knights of Larani coming. Either way, we should be ok, provided no threatening moves.

Done.

Knights of Larani? The Godess? The one I have been praying to? Do I know about these Knights? It seems like the type of thing I should have heard of.

I swear there was a post about them, but I can’t find it. Koldanar may have mentioned them, but you have no actual memories of them.

That’s not really a satisfying answer, is it?

From what Koldanar has told you, they are knights who fight in Larani’s name. They are called Lady of Paladins. Every spring, they clear the trail. And that’s about all you know about them.

A prayer against evil has been said. There are no places to hide. You can hear the army about to come around the corner.

Who is taking point? And do you take a defensive stance? (i.e., are your weapons combat-ready?)

Knights of my lady goddess, I can’t fathom that we may need to be defensive (at the very least we shouldn’t APPREAR defensive.) It might not hurt to be ready to take action though.

Does that sound reasonable to everyone?

Yep. We’re not sure what’s coming but have one possible idea. It doesn’t hurt to present ourselves as able to defend but not aggressive.

stands so that my good eye is facing the oncoming Knights

A couple of men turn the corner, then stop when they see you. You can see a couple more men behind them. They are marching 2 abreast, on foot.

They all have cloth armor, plus ring-mail byrnies, plate half-helms with nose guards, and high leather boots. They all carry multiple weapons. One in front is armed with a short sword and shield, the other with a mace and shield. The men behind them carry pole arms. All are equipped with bows.

One in front holds up his hand to halt the others behind him. You can tell from the sound that there are at least a few dozen others that follow.

He shouts “Who goes there? Speak! Do you speak Harnic, mates?”

Then in Taeldan, he shouts “Speaking does you the tongue common?”

He’s 30 feet away from you.

Looks over the men quickly. Does anything about them seem familar?
Is Harnic the common tongue that we’ve been speaking?

Harnic is what you speak.

You recognize that they are common soldiers. They are not knights*, and they do not bear any sort of identifying devices or standards.

(*Knights would have different shields, and probably better armor. You somehow remember this.)

Yes, soldier, we do speak Harnic.

“Ooh, and like a lord, you do, not like a barbarian. Where’d you learn it, mate?”

Greetings to you. May we speak with your leaders?

tdn, I believe have memories of Larani - so I hope their leaders will have some insignia etc…

“Greetings. I am in charge hear. Lower your weapons and let us pass, friends.”

I’ll make sure to mention any insignia, achievements, or standards that you see. So far you see none.

“Well, lads? Speak or move aside.”

Of course you may pass good sirs. We do not mean to disrupt your journey.
