Let's play a role-playing game

It’s built into the side of the mountain, so going over it will just put you on the mountain. It wouldn’t be too hard to just climb, but where would that take you?

But if you need to tie the rope to something, there are trees.

The rope has a future use for you – you’ll need it to cross the ford that’s down the road.

How would it serve Larani for you to open the door? Are you worthy of her help in this? And how many piety points are you willing to invest? (One point equals an increased 1% chance of your prayer being answered.)

I’m not being facetious in asking these questions – You’re asking for a miracle, so you have to build your case in why your prayers should be answered.

No more rituals come to you at this time.

You can’t pray and stand watch at the same time. But you can get by on 7 hours of sleep and get in 2 hours per day.

The doors are 8 feet tall and 4 feet wide, each.

There’s plenty of stuff to tie the rope to, like dropwood and stones.

While this is the case, you do remember the some of the basic tenets of Laranianism:

-Never start a fight.
-Always diffuse a potential fight with kind and honorable words.
-If a fight is inevitable, be prepared to back your honor with muscle. And steel.
-Chivalry is the word of the day.
-Protect ladies from all harm.
-Protect the poor, especially those that are under your care.
-Fight with honor. Fighting “dirty” is a sin.
-Honor social order. The well-born deserve priviledge, and the poor and disadvantaged deserve protection, if not social status.
-Dying on the field of battle, when fighting for a just cause, ensures(?) an honored place in Tirathor (Laranian heaven).

“NAF, did the praying get the doors open for us?”

Given the heavy use of ‘piety points’ (which could presumably be used for healing etc), the fact that nobody answered our knock and that Koldanar (our local expert) has never seen it being used, I vote to move on to the ford.

Thanks to NAF for the shield - I assume I can use a Spear and Shield in battle?

You can, with a slight penalty for using the spear one-handed. You still kick ass even with the penalty.

NAF has not yet made the plea for the door to open, but I’d remind him that piety points might have better uses than opening doors.

Good call.

We should probably move on, I don’t see anything else here of real interest.

Yes, let’s.

This way!

Well he seems to know where he is going. Ok, lead on!

And you’re off.

The cliff to your right gets higher and higher (or is it that the land below gets lower and lower?). There is a river at the bottom of it. The gorge becomes about 1000 feet across and 1000 feet deep.

At one point, the road turns to the right, and goes about ten feet over the beginnings of what was once a stone bridge. You can see the other end of the bridge on the other side of the gorge. Most of the bridge is missing.

The path continues along the face of the mountain. You keep walking, and your elevation gets lower and lower. By late afternoon, you get to the level of the river. The path continues on, but Koldanar tells you that it is impassable. It loops around and continues on the other side of the river. This is Guthe Ford.

The water is swift, six feet deep, and about 50 feet across. There are trees on both sides of the river.

Change that. Four feet deep. If it were six feet (as the canonical material states), the entire economy would collapse, there’d be anarchy, and no one would have any fun.

Four feet.

Hey, give me the rope…I can head to the other side for you and tie it off. Conversely, if any of you is a good shot, you can try and get it on the other side, but I doubt one of our bows is that strong.

Would Koldanar like to tie the rope around his waist before he crosses?
Then he has both hands free to swim and we can pull him back if needed.

I suspect my character would not ‘kick ass’, but ‘strike a blow for justice’.

I think that’s the only safe way to do it.

You make it safely across the ford and to the other side. Wow, was that water ever cold. Shrinkage abounds.

You march up the path on the other side of the river. The rain has stopped, but cloud cover is heavy. The wind has kicked up, and it has gotten a good bit colder. The path rises, and the river falls away to your right. The path winds around to the left, out of your sight. You can hear someone approach from the opposite direction. It sounds like a whole army.

Stops, holds the group back…Do I recognise the sounds as anything, creatures wise

Some bipedal, some quadrepedal. And there’s a good deal of metal clanging.

Sounds like there may be horses or mules or something like that.

looks for a way to observe the oncoming people without being noticed
