Let's play a role-playing game

Interesting. Thank you.

In both hunting and random encounter rolls, I will weight them accordingly.

What about mooses? Rabbits? Big cats? Big dogs?

Moose/Rabbits: I think not. Not unless the caravan threw out lots of veggies, or spilled several sacks of grain.

Big cats (puma? mt. lions?): Maybe, if there appears to be an unusual abundance of prey animals over a several day period…

Big Dogs: I think dogs may be more prone to scavenging then cats. I know coyote, hyena, and dingo would raid trash cans. Wolves, not as much, but maybe a little, but otherwise they probably occur the same as the big cats…

Cool. I doubt very much that dingos will show up in any case, but other than that I’ll replace any “illogical” animal encounters with something more reasonable.

For now there is still enough food for another day, and no animals of interest have crossed your path. Keep walking or stop to forage/hunt?

How long to the town / toll bridge?

It’s about 15 leagues to Naniom Bridge, and maybe another 5-10 to Getha. You’re averaging about 3 leagues per watch. A watch is 4 hours, and it is spring, so if you march from sun up to sun down, you can squeeze in 3 watches per day.

(A Harnic league is 2.5 miles.)

Sorry, I thought a watch was when the rest of your party are asleep.
How do you define it?

There’s a second definition that I’m using here – A watch is an arbitrary measure of time, four hours. It’s used for movement, random encounters, etc. I think it originally came from maritime use.

Sure a moving ship has watches, but I find that use of it confusing here.

You’re saying if we march for 12 hours, we get 3 ‘watches’ and we cover 3 leagues per ‘watch’.

But why not just say we can march for 12 hours in a day, covering 9 leagues?

I’m using watch to specifically mean being on guard at night whilst the party rests: (which is standard for roleplaying since when you’re not on watch you get 8 hours sleep).

That’s fine. I’ve just been playing Harn for so many decades now that I tend to think in those terms.

You cover 3/4 leagues, or just under 2 miles, per hour.

Be glad I’m not using hexes.

Hexes are fine  - why I used to have a tablecloth with a hex pattern printed on it.

Awesome. Keep up today’s march, and you can move about a hex and a half.

The morning greets you with a cool, stiff breeze. Taelda drums have been sounding on and off all night. It’s disquieting, as it signals that bands of Gargun are about. The safety of the caravan has long since passed, and you’re pretty exposed here.

You get the creepy feeling that you’re being watched.

I’ll take to the foliage (we are still in woods, yes?) and hide / try to spot for a little.

You are able to hide well enough, but you can’t see, hear, or smell anything unusual. Tracking is useless, as the ground has been pretty well trodden recently.

It’s more of a Spidey Sense.

You’ve got sense of something weird, and have stopped moving so that you can look around the hills and check rocks for deer tracks mule poop. To your compatriots, it just looks like you’ve gone behind a bush to pee or whatever.

They keep walking on, unaware of your loligagging. Do you “Psst!” to them to get them to stop walking, or let them walk, making some distance between you and them?

Amnesiacs, do you take notice of Koldanar’s sudden pee stop? Maybe you need to fertilize the local foliage as well, after all. It’s been a long day with no stops.

There’s only five of us and we’re walking through hostile territory on full alert.
Sure we notice that Koldanar has gone into the bush.

You see some Fowlspawn hiding among some trees, a good distance away – several hundred feet. It’s hard to say how many, but you count at least five of them. They are definitely stalking you.

Six of them, in fact. With a cry they brandish their weapons and rush at you.

They’ll be on you in three rounds (thirty seconds).

Don’t we kick ass compared to Fowlspawn, what with our new weapons since the last time we fought them? Hell, I could probably take out one or two before they even get to us?

You’ll fare better with your weapons, but don’t underestimate these things.

Depending on where I am when they rush, I either maintain a hiding spot in the foliage and ambush / flank them, or get my weapons ready while in the road.
