Let's play a role-playing game

(Tiny hint: I think they want you to tag along.)

Ah, grocery lists - this is why I went into fantasy roleplaying!:slight_smile:

I’ll be honest with Jarl. Since I seem to be an elite knight, if he helps me now with fair prices, I’ll reward him later.

I remind the party that we probably need to keep the toll payment in reserve.

Can I earn any quick money from Sir Doren e.g. by doing training or acting as a sparring partner?
Could he tell me where the military bases are past the bridge? (Obviously I don’t want confidential military information - just well-known information where the recruitment offices are etc.)

We need 10f for the toll (hopefully Koldanar has got the exploring bug!).
Do we need to buy packs / skins to carry the food /water? Does Jarl sell those.

If I’ve got this right, I add 50% to the prices given, so cheese costs Jarl 1d (or 4f) per lb, so it costs us 1.5d (or 6f) per lb. (Or 0.4f per ounce before markup, which makes 0.6f per ounce retail. :smack:)
And a bushel is the size equivalent of ‘80 pounds of distilled water weighed in air at 62° Fahrenheit’, right?

I suggest:

1 lb cheese (6f)
bread, rye loaf*2 (3f)
2lb apples (3f)
0.25 lb salted fish (3f)

Total (before any markup) = 15f + 10f (toll ) , leaving 2f.

No. The guy is a poor religious man, and is not in a financial position to hire anyone.

Not really. He comes from Chalced, on the road to Gardiren. I suppose you could approach the grandmaster there and seek entrance to the brotherhood, but it’s not really a well-paid position. Other than that, military bases resemble big stone buildings with moats. Pretty much any major village has one. Getha is the closest, and Gardiren is the closest really big one.

If you seek military employment, the springtime muster is happening really soon. All lords must attend and serve for 60-90 days. Those that are too old, fat, scared, or busy to serve pay scuttage to the crown, which will hire mercenaries in their stead. The pay is (IIRC) 1d/day. Maybe double that, I’ll have to check.

You’ve already got a bag. If Jarl sells you food, he’ll give you whatever containers it comes in. He’s not in the business of transporting empty sacks, so he’ll gladly lighten his own load.

25f = 6d 1f, leaving you with 20d 3f.

Consider that a good rule of thumb is 5lbs of food per man per day. It’s a good day’s march to Getha, and you can be there by nightfall if you leave right now. Also consider that you haven’t had a bite in 24 hours, and that wasn’t much of a meal. You need to eat right away or you’re going to start accumulating fatigue penalties.

Let’s call 1 loaf of bread 1 pound.

Oh, we can get 27d for firewater! (I thought it was 27f.) So we have 108f.

It’s like ‘Big Brother’ with the weekly shopping list and tasks
Also can make a personal plea that all currency be in f. I spent years learning £sd, then £p and I don’t want to do any of that again!

OK, let’s try:

5 lb cheese (30f)
bread, rye loaf*10 (15f)
10lb apples (15f)
1.25 lb salted fish (15f)
1 lb ham (18f)

After 10f for the toll, we have 5f left.

I am surprised at ‘5lbs food per man per day’. This would be, for example:

1 full loaf of bread
1 lb of cheese
1 lb of apples
1 lb of fish
1 lb of ham

Seems like a lot to me…

I fully support glee being in charge of our grocery lists and our money. God knows I would screw it up. Glee for game president!

It does seem like a lot, doesn’t it? I would think that 3 lbs is more reasonable.

My own personal meal plan is 3oz of meat, maybe the same in carbs, and maybe double that in veggies. 12oz, x3, is about 2.5 pounds. Then again, I’m on a weight loss diet, and I’m not hauling sacks of grain up mountains. But 3 lbs sounds far more reasonable. Screw the rules.

You might want to reserve some of that money for additional tolls, inns, bribes, and whatever.

I suppose if you are very physically active (climbing up and down mountains, fighting foul smelling humanoids, and getting hit with prayers that might speed up the metabolism to quicken the healing process), you might eat more food than the average 20th century white collar worker does…

But I would have to be guessing wildly what a reasonable amount should be. Heh.

FWIW, the 5 lb figure came from table on caravan supplies. It listed both food and water requirements for horses, mules, camels, etc. I took the figures for porters, so it can be assumed that they are doing heavy lifting for long parts of the day. It also said that they need 5 lbs of water, which I can believe. That’s 80 ounces, which is what health care professionals recommend.

“To be honest, we’re trying to figure that out ourselves. We can only trust that Larani will reveal to us what happened.”

“Praise Larani! So what’s his name? And what’s yours?”

“I seem to have suffered some mishap myself, so my recollections are very foggy right now. Please remember us in your prayers to our great goddess that we may discover the past we have lost.”

“Oh. I’m sorry to hear that. I will keep you in my prayers, brother.” He walks away.

Nice response. If you’d phrased it slightly differently, you could have made your situation far worse.

Woohoo! I was hoping that would work. I took my cue from your description of him as a poor religious man.

(did we actually get to spar?)

No. He seems to have some pity on you.

I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing but someone else praying for us can’t hurt I’m sure.

(PSh I know that, I just want to feel wanted!! Heh, in reality, I think my character would be a little frightened, but not terribly.)

I have decided to come along with all of you. That bastard of a chief can deal without his scapegoat for a time. And glee, remind me never to get into a fight with you. Please.

I can see how people doing heavy lifting or loads of exercise would need more. (Phelps eats 12,000 calories a day  and stays superbly fit - despite eating enough for 6 normal people.)

I’ve been a Wose Druid, a Norse Berserker and an amnesiac Knight. (I love roleplaying :D) But really I’m a nerdy shopper at heart. :smack:

OK, let’s have a bit less (still assuming Koldanar is with us) of food that should last:

3 lb cheese (18f)
bread, rye loaf*6 (9f)
6 lb apples (6f)
0.75 lb salted fish (9f)
0.6 lb ham (11f)

After 10f for the toll, we have 45f left.

You said we had containers for all that.

Do we need boots or clothing?
Do we need weapons or ammunition?

You’re a little low on arrows, and Koldanar has a nasty tear in his trousers, but otherwise you’re doing OK. Your clothes look pretty barbaric but they’re warm and provide excellent protection from weapons.

Are we heading toward territory where looking barbaric is a REALLY bad thing?
