I don’t think so. Present relations are good. But some people can be ignorant and xenophobic. I wouldn’t expect anyone to roll out a red carpet for you.
How much do arrows cost?
15d (or 60f) per dozen. Add another 75% for being in a seller’s market. You can make your own for less, but you’ll need faclities, time, and materieis that you may not have. Figure 2 hours per arrow with a wooden tip.
The morning grows into noon. If you don’t march now, you won’t make Getha by nightfall. The caravan leaves tomorrow and it’s going in the opposite direction.
So arrows are 105f* for 12?
Assuming Jarl took our deal, we have 45f left, but need some of that for tolls or food.
Can we buy Santo 4 arrows for 30f? (Santo, would 2 for 15f be OK?)
*Stop complicating with the d currency! This is your final warning!!
Your math is correct, but I’m still going to use d as the base unit of currency. Using f is like talking about US prices in terms of quarters or British prices in terms of shillings. Dollars and pounds are the nomenclature. In the Harnic economy, pence are the basic units of cash. Pounds are also used, but only among the very wealthy. If it makes it any easier, think of 12 arrows costing 26.25d.
Not to complicate things any more, but you can strike a much better deal on arrows from a Taelda tradesman than from Jarl. There is one guy that will sell you a dozen arrows for 13d, and they are good quality.
Not to keep harping on money, but wow was I ever wrong about military wages. It’s far more complicated than a certain number of pence per day. For one thing, pay is quarterly. For another, there is far more employment during the summer than in other seasons. Most soldiers need to find side jobs during the colder months. And lastly, wages depend on a number of factors including armor and weapons (which you must supply yourself), a steed (which you must supply yourself), social status, and rank.
An lightly armored militiaman of the lowest rank can expect 24d/month, and summer employment only. That would be you guys. A high ranking knight in full armor can earn 384d/month, possibly year-round. If you guys want to make that kind of cash, you’d have to procure expensive weapons, armor, and steeds. Then you’d have to prove your noble birth status. That could be a problem. Then you’d have to rise in rank.
You clearly have the skills, but you lack the means.
Oh, and not to complicate things even further, but once you cross the bridge, social status is everything. You will officially have the status of free peasants. If you walk around armed to the teeth, someone might have something to say about it. Unless you can prove yourselves to be noble, certain carried items are prohibited. That includes big swords, lances, pole arms, kite and knight shields, mail, plate, and any sort of insignia. You could face flogging, imprisonment, or death for breaking this law.
Spears, roundshields, and bows are OK. Daggers and shortswords are questionable, depending on the mood of the local lawmen.
Have a nice day.
Let’s wait on the arrows, then. We’re low on money as it is, I think we can make do for now until we can get the better deal.
Grrrrr! If you think calculating ‘if 12 arrows costing 26.25d, what do 9 arrows cost?’ is easy, then I am surprised. It’s easier to start with 105f :smack:
You could have told Santo that when he asked about prices!
OK, how about buying Santo 3 arrows for 13f? (That leaves us 32f.)
If we cross the bridge, I’m carrying Spear + Shield which is acceptable, right?
Who’s got equipment that would be ‘questionable’?
Let’s get this show on the road.
Just a heads up to everyone, I will be away from the computer all day tomorrow. I will be around a bit today though, but maybe not as much as normal.
Are we all set with supplies? Is there anything else we should take care of before we cross the bridge? Has Koldanar decided to come with us?
Do you not want 3 extra arrows first?
And is your equipment all ‘acceptable’ beyond the bridge?
Well, I still have a couple, and I’m only to get off a couple before the start of a battle when they get to close. If you guys think it’s not worth the risk, we can pick up a couple arrows; I’m not sure if we can afford it right now, and our money may be better saved for food when we get to the next town.
I’m pretty sure my equipment will be good; it didn’t make the ‘Bad’ list.
Nothing here is really on the bad list. Koldanar is pushing it a little bit, but as long as it’s seen as part of your (foreign) culture rather than a breach of rank, you should be OK.
Well gee of course I’m coming!..but, I have jury duty tomorrow (I have also bowed out of Mafia because of this) So I do not know when I will have the time again. tdn, should you or someone else in game play me for the time being?
You’ve opted not to get the extra arrows.
You pass through the gate, paying the toll.
As you walk along, you see a curious sight. It looks like a big stone cross by the side of the road, about 9 feet tall. It is, in fact, in the shape of a giant sword that is stuck in the ground. It appears quite old and worn. Various pictures are carved into it, on both sides. They depict various scenes, such as Saint Ambrathas fighting a company of Agrikans, Ambrathas entering Dolithor, Mendiz the Lion, and various other Laranian tales. The sword hilt itself is a Laranian holy symbol.
Continuing on, a side road splits off to the south. A wooden sign reads Gardiren, Getha, Naniom Bridge. You turn south towards Getha. You take this road. A swift river runs to the left of it.
Getting to late afternoon, you arrive at a village. Between the road and river is a row of buildings. Some have signs out front, the first of which indicates that it is an inn. Beyond the buildings and to the left is a keep. Five horsemen exit the keep and are heading towards you. They are all armed with broadswords, daggers, lances, and more. They bear black standards charged with an acorn. They all carry black shields, with the exception of the man leading them. His shield is gold and blue, and is counter-charged with a portcullis.
They look like they are going to run you down.
You get out of their way, just barely, and they pass. As they do, the leader slows them to a stop. He turns to you and says “Turn back, barbarians. Armed Taelda are not allowed on Getha grounds within an arrow’s shot of the village. Turn back now, or I’ll have your heads. By your leave, my Grace.”
The other knights threaten you with their lances as the leader continues on his journey. He stops, again, and looks curiously at NAF. “Your Grace?” He turns to Santo. “I don’t know you.” He then turns to glee. “Sir Conwan?”
I smell a thickening plot.
Oh yeah. The game is a pedal extremity.
You’re most welcome. And I only fight bad guys.
Have I been ignored by them?
“I don’t know you, either. Or you”, he says to Koldanar.
