Let's play a role-playing game

If Harapa comes for a visit, and he sees that his room is unavailable, he will want to know who is using it. That could be another security leak. In his absence, this is the only private guest room. The daughter is leaving in a few days, so you could be moved into her room.

You could also stay at an inn.

There are a couple of temples in town, but they are not Laranian.

Just a few more questions for you to consider:

-In what ways might you keep your identities secret? If you stay in the keep, Chimin can probably shield you from prying eyes, but with limited mobility comes limited information. If you were to venture back out into the outside world, what identities and/or disguises might you take on? Maybe start with what social class you appear to have. Would you use facial disguises?

-What sorts of places would you stay in? Inns? Those cost money, but usually not much. You can probably travel by day and always find a bed by nightfall, unless there are serious distances between towns. On horseback would cut yiour travel times considerably, but Koldanar doesn’t know how to ride, and Chimin doesn’t have many steeds to spare.

-If you were to go somewhere, where would you go? Refer to the maps, and feel free to ask Chimin about what’s where. He’ll be happy to tell you what he knows about whatever you might ask about.

NAF, Santo, and Antinor – any illuminations on these subjects?

Can any of us shave to help conceal our identity? It’d be quick and easy, especially if we’ve always had beards.

[oog]I’m not going to be around much this weekend, I’m out of town.[/oog]

Gentlemen, we need to save the DM from having to continually prompt us!:smack:

Here’s the situation as I see it:

Identity

We have identification of three of us as Nobles (and Koldanar knows who he is!).
I’m happy to trust this, because it would be astonishing if a patrol were to ‘pretend’ to recognise us, followed by the Baron. What if we knew who we were - the whole ‘scheme’ falls flat instantly.

We need to find out who Antinor is. Given his fighting skills, he could be a senior soldier who was there when we got kidnapped…

History

Most of us were kidnapped to fix the election in the Royal Council.
We couldn’t be killed, because it would cause a scandal (and even Civil War) if it came out.
However if we turn up later with amnesia, nobody can be blamed and the election result stands.

We need to consider who benefitted, whether we were supposed to recover (seems unlikely) and whether we can reverse the election result.

Current

We need time to analyse the data and decide on our next move.
We need to keep our identities (and any recovered memories) secret until we see a good time to reveal them. (For one thing, this would stop desperate assassination attempts!)

Future

We need to gather resources (both personal e.g. weapons / food / money and troops / supporters).
We need to decide when we will reveal ourselves and where.

I agree that shaving might be good for some of us. But we will need disguises of some sort as well as a way to prove out identities to people who we will need to know the truth about us.

I would like to have a chat with Chimin about where we might wish to go. If we could stay in inn’s that would be best. He may have some ideas about what we can do for money in the short term as well. And I think traveling on foot for now might also be a good option. But before we know any of that we need to figure out where we are headed.

Can Chimin tell me where my home base town was? It seems to me that it was not Getha. I think we need to head there.

My own answers/comments are:

Identity

We will probably find out who Antinor is as we get closer to home.
Givewn how noble we are (sorry, Antinor!), there shouldn’t be a problem if he’s suddenly recognised.

History

As I said, my chief suspect is cousin Meliem (or someone manipulating her)

Current

I’m not sure how much room or security there is here, with other nobles expected. We need money for an inn (and disguises because of the constant influx of travellers).
The riskiest is to return through Nanion Bridge, but I’m not sure how our situation will then improve. (If the Baron was gathering news + information for us, it might make sense.)

Future

I want to ask the Baron for a loan of equipment, rations, mounts and money. Hopefully he will appreciate that a) the national interest is involved b) we will try to repay him.

On a personal note, I want to give Merchant Jarl a small reward for helping me.

Let address a few things you brought up – money, beards (and disguises), and your home bases.

Money – Like I said, Chimin is willing to make you a loan. As national security may indeed be an issue, he’s not going to try to be a profiteer unless you borrow a lot. He’s willing to help you out, but not willing to go into huge debt to do it. He’ll let you take 4 pounds interest-free, as long as you promise to pay it back within two years. After that, 5% per month, compounded monthly. He assures you that this is an excellent deal, as most usurers would charge three times that much. And if you get to your treasuries within two years, you’ll have no problems paying him back.

4 pounds = 960d = 3,840f. That will keep you living like princes for a month, or paupers for a year.

Beards – When you awoke, your beards were not that long. It’s possible that when you were living in society, you were clean-shaven. Only Antinor had a long beard. Koldanar – well, he’s a barbarian. He looks like Jerry Garcia anyway.

Disguises as social rank – The higher your status is, the more mobility you have, but the more people will ask questions. If you travel as serfs, someone is likely to wonder where you escaped from and apprehend you.

If you travel as nobles, someone might ask you whether you are a Rockefeller of the Newport Rockefellers and how your aunt Mildred is. You will also need heraldry, and carrying false heraldry is a major offense. It’s like carrying a fake ID, only far worse. If the heraldry is your own, then you’re advertizing your identities right out in the open.

Chimin’s personal herald might be able to give you valuable information and options, but that brings him in on your conspiracy. There might be an ethical issue with him helping you out as well.

There are two other options – the guilded free or the unguilded free. You could pass yourselves off as ratters, masons, tutors, farmers, millers, sages, toymakers, shipwrights, merchants, thespians… The list goes on and on. This would allow you some freedom of movement and smaller weapons.

Your home bases – look again at the PDF, 1st page.

Conwan is from Querina, in square K5, near Tashal.
The Archbishop is in the Temple at Caleme, nearer to Tashal (not on the map).
Orsin is in far south Kobing, K6.

The queen is probably either in Tashal or Olokand, J5. At least, past kings traditionally summered in Olokand. This is also the seat of Sheriff Maldan.

As far as what equipment Chimin can spare, it might be wise to first decide what identities you will take on. He can dress you like peasants with no problem. Fully equipping you as knights? VERY expensive! Probably beyond his immediate means.

Talk to us about the mid classes more and the possibilities of traveling under Chmin’s herald. Would we be able out outfit ourselves as say messangers for Chimin traveling to the Temple at Caleme on his behalf?

Sure. Messengers don’t really need to be travelling under anyone’s authority. They could be considered unguilded free, who work on a per-message fee, and are accorded some latitude in regards to modest arms and armor.

Most travel on horse (about 360d per steed). I suppose you could walk without raising too much suspicion. People travel by foot all the time.

I’m not sure what you mean “under Chimin’s herald.” Do you mean as his agents, deputies, or something like that?

You are the one who mentioned it. But yeah that was my thinking. We pose as people working for him so we get some of the benefits of his station while allowing ourselves to be mostly overlooked as part of the upper lower class.

I see. You said herald when you meant heraldry, so that threw me. You’re thinking that if you pose as his agents, you can get away with more arms, armor, and authority. And you’d be right. That’s workable, and you don’t have to be anybody to get away with it, as long as the deputization is genuine. Even Koldanar can legally be deputized. And it would be easy enough to travel under pseudonyms.

Chimin is really two people, a baron and a sheriff, so you could be deputized as either. And as either, you’d have jurisdiction in only some areas, but would be free to travel as you will. You would not carry full heraldry, but badges or differenced shields or something like that to distinguish who you are. (And aren’t!)

OK.

Errr, the Baron and a soldier recognised some of us. They can state whether we are normally clean-shaven.

NAf’s herald idea sounds good.

Otherwise I suspect that either messengers or soldiers are our best bets.
Where would these people stay, where could they go and what weapons/armour would they carry?

Good point, although the soldier didn’t recognize you. Lady Myrtis did, though.

Conwan and Archbishop Edine are clean-shaven. Orsin has a short beard.

Personally, I don’t think a beard is a good disguise, unless it’s really full. For years I had one, then one weekend I decided to shave it off. I left the mustache. The following Monday, a coworker asked me if I had grown a mustache over the weekend! It’s amazing how most people never even notice facial hair.

At any rate, if NAF walks into Caleme, he is going to be recognized unless his disguise is amazing.

I like all of those ideas.

Soldiers might stay in tents on commons, or at inns. Messengers would probably stay at inns. A lot depends on how big your retinue is, how many steeds you have, how many pack animals, etc. A small party carrying little and eating hot meals would more likely stay at inns. Commons are usually for much larger parties, such as small, self-sufficient armies.

I will get back to you on arms and armor. I think I need to check with some experts so I don’t get this horribly, horribly wrong. :smack:

(I’ve been out in a meeting all day, let me catch up on the current info and I’ll get some ideas out)

While you guys are catching up, making plans, and enjoying your weekend, I think I’ll take this rare time at home to go over some family stuff. There used to be a great online page about this, but I can’t find it anymore. It’s back to paper books for now.

The current year is 720TR.

Edine Kynn (NAF) has at least two sisters, and probably more, but information is scattered. Chimin at least knows this: One sister is the wife of the Earl Curo of Neph at Gardiren. His family is extensive, but the Lady Myrtis is one of Curo’s sisters.

King Torastra (635-693) had a brother and a sister. The brother was the Archbishop until 708, when he died a mysterious death*. Conwan was the last person to see him alive, if the rumors are true. Edine is his successor. The sister married the Earl of Kiban. Their son is the current Earl, who has financial interest in Naniom Bridge. He is also the Exchequer Royal.

Torastra had six children. The eldest son, Haldan, died before he could take the throne. He fathered three daughters. The eldest, Cheselyne, was passed over for queen. The youngest is now Queen Meliem.

Torastra’s second son was King Miginath, who passed away just about a month ago.

Torastra’s third child, Lenera, died just last year. Her eldest son is Baron Orsin Firith (Santo). There are five more children. Orsin was married to Lenyl Tasrin, who died 17 years ago. Orsin and Lenyl bore a son and a daughter. The daughter died at the age of one, a year before Lenyl died. Son Prehil is 21 and married.

Gee, sorry, Santo. To top it off, your youngest sister died as well. :frowning:

Torastra’s fourth child bore two sons. One is the Baron of Nenda, the other is the Lord Chancellor of Kaldor.

Torastra’s fifth child, Brandis, bore five children. The first, daughter Siwen, is the Pelnala (Mother Superior) of the Order of the Balm of Joy, a Peonian church. See the last page of the PDF. The second child is Conwan. Conwan, favored by many for the throne, is married to Hesena. They have three children., ages 6, 8, and 10. Brandis’s youngest child is Udine Elendsa, who married Chimin’s son Harapa. Their toddler son (who is in the next room) is an heir to the throne.

So… More information from Chimin and Lady Myrtis.

*Died violently in his room, which was locked from the inside.

Note to those playing : I’m back (Woo jury duty!) but I’m busy all weekend. Popped in to say that I’ll be back Monday morning.

Just getting a chance to look at thins for the first time this weekend. I might be King!

More tomorrow I guess.

Welcome back, guys.

I checked on the legalities of Chimin deputizing you. You can indeed carry the weapons and armor of knights. You can bear Chimin’s achievement (Party per bend sinister azure and or, a portcullis counterchanged, in case you were interested ;)), differenced to show that you are his agents and not him himself. You will also need to carry a letter of introduction from him, stamped with his seal, should anyone challenge your credentials.

Should you travel abroad as such, you are acting on the baron’s behalf – your behavior is his behavior. Be respectful, courteous, chivalrous, and kind. No drunken barroom brawls, no throwing banana peels under little old ladies, and defenestrating queens.

Chimin doesn’t have a lot of mail to go around, but ring or scale armour is plentiful. Broadswords, maces, and daggers are as well. Knight shields will be painted for you. I’d be wary of carrying too much, though, as encumbrance is an issue.

Err, you all won’t make me groom for this plan, will you? I know we’re going disguised and all, but my (pats his luxuriant hair) hair took an awful long time to grow, and I know if anyone were looking for our group my description would be in there…
