Let's play a role-playing game

Yes, things are going bump in the night.

I caught Antinor in another thread, and he said he’d be along shortly. That was last week.

At any rate, he quietly shakes you awake to tell you he heard something.

Hark, I heard the cannon roar!

The cannon sounds suspiciously like human footsteps.

Santo, stop shouting in your sleep. What’s going on?

You hear it too. Someone walking clumsily, and close. Behind your tent.
It’s from one of my dad’s favorite jokes.

A man really wants to be an actor in a play. He goes to audition after audition, and never makes the cut. Finally, after months and months of being an extra, he finally gets a one line speaking role. The play is to have a cannon boom, and the guy is supposed to say, “Hark, I hear the cannon roar.”

He has a month to prepare, and practices his line every day:
Hark, I hear the cannon roar.”

“Hark, I hear the cannon roar.”

“Hark, I hear the cannon roar.”

“Hark, I hear the cannon roar.”

“Hark, I hear the cannon roar.”

“Hark, I hear the cannon roar.

Finally, they were done with the dress rehearsals, and opening day was upon them. They never fired the cannon before; they knew it worked and it was a pain in the ass to set up. So, when the time came, the cannon shot:
BOOM!!!

And the guy says:

“What the fuck was that?!”
Sorry, it’s better in person.
But, yeah, footsteps. WTF?

Santo, be a pal and stick your head outside of the tent and take a look at who is making all that racket would you?

I’ll back Santo up.

Santo and Antinor, by the time you are able to see what’s going on, the intruder is quite close – just a few feet away. (Blame it on the tiny radius of your fire.)

It’s the young woman from down by the river. She looks a little odd, like she’s half asleep or on drugs. Her face is expressionless. Her arms are outstretched, and she’s reaching for Antinor.

Does she look dangerous?

Anyone who looks expressionless and who is reaching for someone is automatically suspect.

Zombie?
Paralysis?
Infection?
Strangulation?

Any wilderness encounter in the dead of night with a lone unarmed human is potentially dangerous.

She doesn’t look like she’s been strangled. She also doesn’t look cold, which considering the weather and her light clothing seems odd.

tries to talk to the girl to see if she speaks our language, and to try to find out what she wants

She doesn’t speak back. Her face is dull and expressionless, but she turns to you and extends a hand to your face.

She touches it, if you want her to.

allows her to touch my face, but maintains a ready posture

allows her to touch my face, but maintains a ready posture

Rugger, be careful!

:starts thinking of all the things that could go horribly wrong and ways that I might know of to fix them:

Can you bless me in advance?

Only if they are not what they appear to be.

I meant she could paralyse, infect or strangle Santo.

Yeah, well…

When she touches him, his face sort of goes blank, like he’s automatically in a trance.
