Does he have an office?
Press ‘n’, make sure you have assigned a dwarf to be your bookkeeper. Press ‘s’ and set him to something above Lowest Precision. I usually set mine to Highest Precision - he won’t do much other than record keeping if you do this, so don’t set this on a dwarf who needs to do anything else important. Also, make sure you have built him an office - just place a table and chain in a room and assign them to him.
I didn’t know about hitting s, and since I’m on the phone right now I’ll have to check when I get home.
Otherwise I’ve done all the other suggestions except the chain. Why a chain, Brother?

Sorry, that should have been chair, not chain. Pre-coffee typo.
Ah. I thought maybe you were making REALLY sure that the fucker stuck to his ledgers!
-Joe
Hah! I thought the same thing.
Sooooo, friends, dwarves, what’s up? Please don’t tell me this is the end. I am sorry my turn was a bit slow, but I really busted my hump to get everything done. I know it’s silly but I almost feel like I’ve been given the cold shoulder. Irked is how I’d phrase my current feeling.
I’ll ask again. Who wants to go next?
I, too, hope it’s not the end. I’ve been a bit absent because of a house-move I’ve had going on (just arrived today), but am nonetheless looking forward to the next installment. I think we’ve mostly abandoned the original succession list, is that correct? Perhaps that’s the problem - for my part, I reckon any experienced player can step up at this point and that would be kosher. Hell, I’d do it myself but I was the player directly before Auto so it seems a bit strange… At this point I’d normally ask if any new players want to step up to give it a lash, but given the last journal entry that seems like a dubious proposition. How about it though, experienced players? Doesn’t reading the last journal entry make this year sound like so much fun?
By the way Auto, I thoroughly enjoyed your journal post. I read it just before I started moving house, and particularly given my recent stint as leader it was edge-of-seat stuff. I hadn’t thought how one might approach a journal scenario in which your dwarf goes mad (melancholy, I’m guessing…?) but, nicely done. Sorry your guy went crazy by the way - that was probably my fault for not giving him proper rooms and stuff. I didn’t think it’d go south quite that quickly, though.
I haven’t had the nerve to load up the save file for the fort since you uploaded it (and as mentioned, it has been busy o’clock here at the Dinaroozie household) and I’m kind of afraid of what I’ll find. I hope you have enjoyed what I presume to be your first unexpected fort flooding experience, though. I did a similar thing once when I got distracted by someone talking to me on the internet and forgot to tell a dwarf to stop operating a screw pump, and when I got back my fort was full of water. Good times.
**FlyingRat **was on the original succession series, and was supposed to be able to take a turn about now.
If not, the original rules called for the play list to repeat if we got to the end and nobody hadn’t gone that wanted to. I can take a second turn and try and fix some of the mess if people want.
My vote goes that we wait a bit to see if FlyingRat responds and if not, AndrewL has a crack at it.
I’m probably going to end up giving it a burl myself too (outside of the succession game, of course) just to see how things are looking. Something about the idea of an ocean-oriented flood not completely destroying things makes me laugh; I have to see if for myself.
Sorry for dropping out on everyone-- I was off in China for two weeks and hadn’t checked the thread updates in a while.
I can take a turn now, or if AndrewL would prefer a second crack at it, I’m perfectly willing to go out of order.
Warning: I haven’t read any of the fortress updates yet. It might even be interesting to play the clueless newbie shoehorned into an administrative position, but I’ll try and catch up soon.
Go ahead and take a turn. I’ll pick it up after you’re done, provided there’s a fortress left.
Thanks y’all for the replies. I feel a lot dwarfier
So… sheepishly sneaks into thread I owe everyone an apology, because I haven’t been able to budget either the time or the concentration to take a proper turn, what with my upcoming move. I’ve taken a look at the fortress, and poked around a little, but I think at this point it would be wiser to bow out and pass things along to AndrewL…and also strike my name from the rotation altogether for the time being (I definitely want in later, if there’s still room, but I need to get mundane life sorted out first!)
My great apologies, everyone. I should have realized sooner that I wouldn’t be able to pitch in right now, instead of making everyone else wait a month.
If I need to reupload the original fortress archive, I can do that.
I can download it and play over the weekend.
Do we have anyone else who wants to take a turn after I’ve finished? Any new takers or anyone who’s gone again that wants another turn?
Hooray for the update! I hadn’t realised how much I’d been missing them. Good work on it, too, AndrewL - it’s edge-of-the-seat stuff. Your description of the flood situation was also pretty hilarious. Keep up the good work!
Thanks. The funny thing, it’s not embellished much. All of that happened - including Canius being the only one to disobey orders and charge the enemy, and then being rescued just in time before the bridge was raised. And then two groups of goblins came up the fishing-hole and shot a pet duck, and then being killed by the military without a single dwarf death. I’m not used to having an effective military, I usually deal with sieges with elaborate deathtraps.
Another lurker checking in to say how much I appreciate that this is continuing. Can’t wait to hear what the construction gambit will be about.
I really enjoy the dwarf fortress stories, thank you.
From the current timing, with a bit of luck this succession game will finish up around the time the next version of DF hits. I’m looking forward to that one quite a bit - there’s going to be some very cool new features including, I believe, werewolves.
