Let's talk Videogames!

I’m about 35 hours into DA:I, and I keep getting bogged down on side quests. It would be fine if I got more XP for them, but I feel like I’m still waaaaay too weak. There are Fade Rifts in the Hinterlands that I just can’t get closed yet because the demons around them slaughter me, and that just seems wrong.

I get it: the game needs to be challenging. But, I’m the bleeping Herald of Andraste. I went into the Rift and got spit back out, and can literally close them with my magic hand. On top of that, I can shoot a fireball at any enemy I want, and electrocute the ones that can survive that. Somehow, a bear still takes me 10 minutes to kill. That’s what I don’t get. I should be leaving a Yogi-shaped hole in the ground every time Pooh even glances at me, the Berensteins* can still rip me apart. It’s annoying.

*That’s how we spell it in my universe.

I’ve been getting into Thief and Alien Isolation lately. and a little bit of LOTR, War in the North as well. anyone else get down on these?

edit: I’ve also been playing the Xbox 360 port of the first Resident Evil game as well. Jill is so hot… anyway yeah, I am a poly game abuser. it’s… an issue I have.

How’s this? Have you heard of Ben “Yahtzee” Croshaw? He does rather harsh reviews of games in a comedic style. He is well known for hating on the vast majority of games he reviews. And here is his review on Psychonauts.

That’s right, not even he could think of bad things to say about it. And this was before he’d gotten comfortable in giving positive reviews. In fact, this was his first one.

And it’s not hard. I can’t even play Mario 64 without dying early on. But I could play the hell out of this game. It is a platformer, but not a precision one. It’s more about using your psychic powers effectively.

None of your other games seem all that special. But Psychonauts is. Plus you’ll know pretty quickly if it’s the game for you. (Just realize you’ll get a lot more powers than you have at first.)

Ummmm, maybe I clicked on the wrong link, but he clearly says that the platforming handles dodgily, the sidequests are repetitive, the combat is Meh, and it has a messed up difficulty curve. All of which are accurate description of Psychonauts. I think those qualify as “bad things”.

Maybe you’re a special case, but Meat Circus is widely considered simply brutal.

Psychonauts is special. It’s incredibly amusing, it’s one of the most creative games of all time, and it’s a boatload of fun. But pretending that it is somehow flawless or it’s not, at times, difficult ignores reality.

It’s the time of year for Dying Light.

An open world zombie killing game is all I ever wanted out of the genre and this game delivers. It legitimately startles me when one of the walkers runs up on me undetected.

I turn the lights off at home then go on a night-time run in the game, guided by only a flashlight and pursued by beasts. It’s a thrill.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard any reasonable person call Psychonauts flawless. It’s the kind of game that’s great in spite of its flaws. It’s also worth noting that supposedly the Steam release lowers the difficulty of the final level by quite a bit.

I actually liked that the game had the old-school RPG element of having to discover that some shit was too high-level for you and you just had to make a note of it and come back. It feels good when you’re finally bad ass enough to handle them. I do dislike that some trash encounters take as much time as encounters that actually advance the plot, but I slogged through them alright.

I had the same experience with Skyrim. After slaying the first dragon and being pronounced Dragonborn, I still had to gain some levels before I could get up that mountain. The animals up there just kicked my ass!

I’m now in the 2023 season; just picked up a season-opening win over Florida at the Swamp. Still winning the title every year; I think I’m up to 8 in a row and 10 overall.

Finished Witcher 3. One of the greatest games ever, I loved the characters and storylines, near perfect in every way. I’m going to take a breather before doing the DLC so I don’t burn out on it.

Finished Life is Strange. Another amazing game. Episode 5 felt clunky, short, and tacked on, but the game as a whole was worth it.

I’m now in between any new games, so I think I might take a break until near Xmas, and then do a marathon stubble-and-jammies binge over the holidays.

Eh, it don’t mean nothing. 2023 is a rebuilding year for us!

Saw this a few weeks back and got inspired to dust off the first Borderlands again. I haven’t touched it since 2010. It doesn’t do much, but what it does, it does perfectly. No way I am stopping till I get to a level 60 siren.

To ramble a bit here is a list of reasons why first borderlands is best borderlands:
[ul]
[li] Action skill is powerful enough to take out enemies who are the same level as you[/li][li] Shields that restore health/ammo[/li][li] Full-auto pistols[/li][li] Enemies in areas you’ve been to already don’t level as much as they do in the sequels, once you’ve leveled past a location you don’t have to crawl around in fear of a rocket goliath one shotting you.[/li][li] Ability to find loot that is outright better then what you’re currently carrying. I swear Borderlands 2 must be hardcoded to show you at least one red arrow on anything you find.[/li][/ul]

Borderlands 2 is great and I’m probably gonna replay it next, but damn, the “balancing” they did does not seem like an improvement to me.

FWIW: Massive Chalice ended up being really special, in a “serious candidate for personal game of the year” sort of way. One Way Heroics Plus was cool but not revelatory, more an iterative improvement on the original game (which I loved when it first came out, and still do, but didn’t really need more of the same). More Diablo happened, but then fizzled out, as More Diablo is wont to. Haven’t touched the other games I mentioned, yet. Psychonauts jumps back to top of list now that I saw your response on the thread bump. Of course, I have to get through it this weekend before the SC2 Protoss expansion comes out…

Tonight starts the “Heroes of the Storm” championships over at Blizzcon.

I had GTA 5 on the PS3, when I got my PS4, I purchased GTA 5 again. What a great game! That being said, I haven’t been real happy with the availability of games for the PS4. Part of it, admittedly, is that I’m older and I am way more picky about games.

So, to answer the OP, right now I’m playing Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and having a lot of fun with it. I cannot wait until the latest Uncharted comes out. Supposedly March, 2016.

I’ve been playing the indie game Rebel Galaxy; a 2D trading/fighting spaceflight game. Someone described it as being like “Freelancer and *Firefly *had a baby”. Pretty fun I think.

Been playing Super Mario World on the Game Boy Advance the last couple of days. Now that I’ve beaten it, I’m unlocking a few of the hidden exits that I didn’t get to the first time.

Life is strange is calling to me. I love the Tell Tale games, specially the Walking dead series, and I liked the Game of Thrones one too (waiting for the final episode of Season 1. also eyeballing Tales form the borderlands - will probably pick that up during the holidays. Have you played those? how do they stack up to life is strange? the game is on deep discount on Steam so I’m very tempted to buy it now.

Been playing nothing but Fallout 4 right now, but I’m also finally dipping my toes a bit more on Galactic Civilizations 3. The latest update seemed to have really improved some of the core mechanics, and I’ve also been streaming the game form my Pc to my tablet for some relaxing playtime. I might invest on an Nvidia shield tablet, specially if they discount it on black friday.

Two weeks, three days and 15 hours until Just Cause 3.

Other than my typical MMOs, Legend of Kyrandia
