I admit Liberal has been acting a bit …odd… recently. I hope he uses this time to reflect. I also hope he doesn’t get banned- as although we sometimes disagree, he has made major contributions to this board.
I’ll overcome my aversion to smilies to say that Spongebob Snarkpants’ (what a pretty name - I hope s/he signs up permanently so s/he can continue to sock it to us and say it as it is - we all need that, don’t you think?) comment was more deserving of a 
(certainly made me smile), or perhaps a :p, or even a :o.
And you gotta be speedy to beat a Moderator to the draw these days…
Lib, if you are out there, best wishes for your health. Spirtus said a lot of what I feel about you as well, both the good and the not so good, but you’ve seldom seemed mean spirited (downright cranky on occation but othertimes such a gentlemen I’m inclined to overlook the curmudgeon).
Whenever I read Spiritus Mundi, I will now always see the image of Melchett from Blackadder II.

The irony is, Liberal is practically a staple of threads like this one, issuing his warning that it is unseemly to take shots at those who cannot defend themselves.
(Not that I’m presuming to speak for him, of course. Do what thou whilst.)
I will never understand what all the animosity against Liberal is all about. I’ve read all the arguments against his posting style and whatnot, and I just don’t see the problem.
Then again, I probably don’t take this message board as seriously as some others do.
Seconded, LA. Liberal isn’t always the guy I’d look to for political agreement. But I can’t think of anything off the top of my head that set me off in what he said.
Hijack a thread? Well, it takes more than a few people to respond to the post to actually hijack it. Those people could either start a Pit thread to insult him, or, oh I don’t know, ignore the post and address the OP. But I dont have complete mind control of you mortal heathens. :mad:
Christ on a crutch, I have exchanged cell numbers with DtC and actually gotten along with Reeder in a few threads.
There is the option of realizing a person uses a message board to state and try to defend a view. The fact that some statements you disagree with are used in threads years later seems wrong. (Don’t I know it!)
Liberal, if you can get to this thread, please know I hope nothing but the best for you. And send an e-mail if you happen to not be able to respond here on the SDMB. Just don’t punk me. My sympathy ends at that point.
And for anyone that is so pissed by him, there is a (don’t mention you did it) very simple solution. Put him on the ignore list. Simple. Direct. Proves you are smart enough to figure out there is a way to not see his posts.

Well said Duffer. It is the strong personalities that made/make the dope. I find myself agreeing with Lib almost as much as I disagree with him but disagreements/debates is what make the dope interesting.
I didn’t always (or often/ever in some cases) agree with them but I feel there is a hole left by the Reeders, Decembers, Collounsbys, Aldes, Desmos etc and now Lib.
This board would be far less interesting if everyone agreed or argued civily. I know I keep coming back to see the interactions between those with strong opinions.
There are many places on the net where liked minded types parrot each other, many soft fuzzy places to visit, none of them are vaguely interesting. The Dope was one place where you could see a wide range of opinions and fierce debate…that seems to be slipping away because some people are more worried about politeness and towing the line then interesting discussions.
Interesting people with strong opinions often upset people…they also make us think. NZ’s election is next month, I will be voting for the leftist side, I enjoy a touch of socialism but Lib always made me think. I kept thinking I was right but he made me evaluate my position…

Umm, you guys realize he was suspended for inappropriately bringing up his death notice in the heat of a Pit argument? He’s not on convalescance holiday - he’s stated quite plainly that his “biology” is not a concern of his so there’s no reason to expect him to “come back healthy” or at least any healthier than he is now.
I expect him back the exact same. I can hardly wait.
