Considering his (typical) evasiveness in that thread when asked to explain what the doctor actually told him, I personally doubt that “death notice” is quite so definite or so imminent as he implied it to be.
I expect him back exactly the same too, and wonder how effective a suspension will be considering that Liberal has never significantly changed his behavior for more than a few months since I’ve been on the boards.
When we suspend someone, it’s to give them time out to collect themselves, reflect on what’s happened, and hopefully come back with better stuff.
We try to give them the benefit of the doubt here – as we do more often than not with everyone on the board – in hope that they can turn things around.
With the exception of spam artists and trolls who we try to remove as expeditiously as possible, we prefer to build the community. Banning a true member of the community is always a last resort and is never undertaken without some regret. We wish people wouldn’t take us to that place.
You’re not the only one. I think Liberal is one of the most interesting posters on these boards. I often find myself clicking on a thread after noting that he is the last person to reply just to see what he has to say.
Half the pittings Liberal receives would sink without a trace if it was any other poster.
Perhaps I may ask what specific behavioral changes you hope to see in Liberal when he is allowed back? The announcement in this thread is extremely vague as to the reasons for the suspension, and far more so than other such announcements I have seen in other such cases. Normally a specific cause has been given. I would presume that the reasons go beyond merely discussing his health in a Pit thread in which he was being attacked, since as far as I know he has never done that before.
I can see where some of the animosity towards Liberal comes from. Dude be tough to debate with. He’s a larf riot though, and definitely a poster whose posts I look forward to reading.
Enjoy the time off. Sleep in for a change. You’re old now and you need your rest. You know how cranky you get.
Not playing the death card, as in “I’m fixing to die, so be nice to me” would be a great start. “Jesus is taking me home” may have worked for Oral Roberts, but that has traditionally been seen here as a lousy way to try to win an argument.
We also want him – and everyone else – to lay off the constant political hijacks. Yes, there’s quite a bit of hijacking that goes on in threads and sometimes they end up being more interesting when they go in new directions, etc., but to make everything the same dreary political argument all the damn time, that’s abusive. If you find in an existing thread you want to be all political about it, make another thread already. This is especially true of threads in areas that are more nonpolitical.
Liberal is aware of all of this. Whether he chooses to do something about it or not remains to be seen, but again, we’re gonna give him the benefit of the doubt here when he comes back.
Normally, when you (as a member of society) claim to be dying, the normal reaction from others is to be sympathetic. While he may not have asked for such a result, he almost certainly knew that would be the outcome.
It has been brought to my attention that some may believe my characterization above is what Liberal actually wrote in the kerfuffle that caused him to be suspended.
For the record, here is what he said exactly, dropped in the middle of a big argument he was having with a lot of other people:
Comes out of the “You’ll be sorry when I’m dead” songbook afaic. We’re not having it.
