Liberals mad about Kim K on NPR

It was a game show, not a talk about the Ukraine problem.

Very good article by the guy who put her on the show:

NPR interviews Kim Kardashian, listeners revolt.

“Liberals”?

I actually happened to be listening to Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me when she was on. I kinda went “bwah?” but didn’t give it much thought. She was uninteresting during the interview, but not an idiot. She was discussing a book of selfies, which she tossed off - she seems used to not being taken seriously, which is appropriate…

But yes, I have read a few reactions to her appearance by other NPR fans and yes, it is time to CLUTCH ONE’S PEARLS!! I get it - it’s not like NPR has many pop-culture twits on these types of shows - but it nothing to get one’s knickers in a twist about…

Liberals? I thought it was snobs who don’t don’t normally listen to Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me. I thought she fit right in with their normal wacky hijinks, except a bit less self-aware.

We public radio listeners are an intellectually snobby bunch. That is a shock to you? To someone who works for NPR?

Did not hear this week’s WWDTM and did not listen to this interview … but yes when I choose to keep tuned to my public radio station I do not want to be subject to Kimness. It is already unavoidable enough.

The guy made a misstep. He thought “she is famous, people will love hearing her talk, score!” And he is blaming his misunderstanding what that audience wants on the audience, that they are close minded because they expect this station to not define being famous for being famous as “score!” … he’s a doofus.

The reactions quoted may be over the top (some of it seems intentionally so) but it was a bad choice. Own that.

Anyone think the person who called her husband a no talent has even heard any of his music?

I thought it was hilarious they put Kim on the show, and I’ve been listening to WWDTM every week for many, many years. I knew some folks would get all up in a dander about it, but, hey, it’s an irreverent news quiz show, and I love they don’t take themselves too seriously.

Who is her husband. What instrument does he play? I listen to NPR and manage to avoid irrelevancies like that.

Kanye West is her husband , he’s a rapper and songwriter and does a lot of other stuff

My opinion of her improves if she agreed to the appearance because she’s familiar with the program. (Sadly, it was probably one of many bookings planned by her publicity staff to promote the book.)

And I was amused when she said that her husband gets jealous when their two-year-old child gets something. He sounds really immature.

I would hope her publicity people would figure out that not many NPR fans would buy her book. But as they say, no such thing as bad publicity.

So he’s not a musician? :dubious:

I agree. It actually seemed cruel to put her on, being a bit dumb and mostly famous for having The Butt That Ate LA.

He does, doesn’t he? He reminds me of that horse’s ass who stole the stage at an award show once. I don’t know the details because All Things Considered follows IMPORTANT news, not self-important jerks. Except Trump, but he needs to be running for president to get any coverage. Maybe if this West fellow were to run for office or were proven to be an agent for the Illuminati it might happen. It worked for Jay-Z.

I’m guessing Kanye West has been mentioned on NPR at least a few times. He got blasted all over the media for his stunt at the award show with Taylor Swift.

NPR story on that incident

I would hope that the NPR affiliate who books these things would realize that there is a lot of disdain in their audience for the Kardashian circus and since their model is primarily member support, maybe giving her a platform for publicity was not in their best interest.

Not on ATC or Morning Edition, as I recall. MANY times on WWDTM, though, and never in a respectful manner. Same with Kim, and one would think her publicist would check into these things, but one must recall that publicists, as a group, are idiots.

Yeah, it makes sense to have her on the show; that show is largely predicated on pop culture, including the excesses of pop culture.

Kanye or Kim not on NPR news shows? Searched the word Kanye on NPR website and there are plenty of hits. I expect he’s been talked about on NPR way more than she has.

She knows many people don’t like her or her family. But I guess she doesn’t really get too upset as the long as the cash rolls in.

FFS, I was mostly making a joke on the natural superiority of us NPR listeners. And don’t kid yourself thinking that each of those mentions wasn’t greeted with an online collective clutching of pearls.

Kim’s appearance reminds me of Mel B’s appearance on the 2014 Big Fat Quiz of the Year. Scary Spice seemed clueless about the show or what was expected of her, and quickly went surly. Kim, though, has a sense of humor about herself and seemed to be having fun. She seems like a nice, fun person, so I guess I can’t make fun of her anymore. Open season on Kanye and Mel B, though.

Perhaps the idea behind the booking was that it might draw an audience that wouldn’t otherwise have given *Wait, Wait *a chance.

Who knows, some small fraction of such a new audience might actually find that they like the show (and stay on to become contributors).

(Also, it gets people talking about the show; that’s not necessarily a bad thing.)

For all of his apparent psychopathology though Kanye is actually famous for his musicality. I don’t know enough to have an opinion but many who do would classify him musically as a genius. That is enough for me to believe he is a person of interest, for me to be a bit curious about. There is some meat in there.

Kim? She is Coke being shoved at me everywhere I go that I have no interest in drinking, except that at least there is something to Coke that can concievably tempt me on occassion.
