Life On The Other Side Of The Burlap - A Renaissance MMP

I’m not a beer drinker, so I’ll pass on the Beast. I prefer margaritas.

I would love any puck easily available to you that you would care to swap. The prize of my collection is a 1996 World Cup puck my SIL got for my off of e-bay.

My hockey wall.

Damn it.

Wall, take 2.

Great, now the skiffman has to run to Safeway to get apples so I can make apple crisp, at 8:21 pm Alaska Daylight Time.

It has been a very hectic week. I know that it’s all gonna be worth it when the remodel is done, but I’m just not a delayed gratificaton kind of woman. I have to have my flooring trucked from California to Seattle, then put on the slow boat. I am not gonna be a happy camper if the floor isn’t in before Christmas. PFD’s* came out this week so the contractor and his family headed up for Anchorage yesterday. (Thursday) They won’t be back until Sunday night, so nothing will be done until Monday afternoon at the earliest. Everything is out of place, stuck in boxes, it’s just not the way I like things, grr… deep breathing

It is definetly Autumn with a vengence here, temps in the low 40’s to mid 50’s, with the occasional dip into the 30’s. (That’s all Farenheite, btw!) The ferns are brown, the trees are all in various shades of golds and browns, with the occasional flashes of red from the devils club berry spikes, the leaves and berries of the highbush cranberries, and the last of the fireweed. I got my box of bulbs yesterday, minus the asiatic lilies which will be here sometime next week. I should have real purty flowers in the Spring, which makes for a happy kaiwik.

The big news of the week needs a little backstory. The Son was undiagnosed with ADHD until he was 10 and in the fourth grade. By that time his impulse control and anger management skills were non-existant, his furth grade teacher was very rigid in her interacting with the students, and my kid was a wreck. I took him to the doctors and he was dx’d classic ADHD. I was encouraged to put him on Adderal. We tried that one day and then I flushed the pills down the toilet, his reaction was that bad. I homeschooled him for one year, during which most of our time was spent in behavior management and coping skills. It was his decision to repeat the fifth grade, seeing as he didn’t get all of the academics he needed, and he has been steadily improving ever since. Not to say he doesn’t have bad days, he does, but he is phenomanally improved since fourth grade. Which brings us to this year, his seventh-grade-middle-school-I-am-a-teenager year. So far, so good. I received his first progress report earlier this week, all A’s and B’s, terrific! He has been volunteering to go out and split wood every day. Then, Tuesday I got a call from the school, my son has been chosen male Rotary Club Student of the Month! This is a huge deal in Kodiak, his photo will be hung up in the school with past Rotary Students as well as being printed in the local paper, and he and the female student get to go to lunch with the Rotary Club next Tuesday…W00T! I am a proud mama! Now all he needs is a nice plague to make it complete! (see, I have been paying attention, and congrats to all those deserving congrats!)

Keeping up with what’s for dinner, last night was snow crab cassarole, tonight was Swedish Meatballs with cream gravy, smashed N.O.T.'s and corn. Tomorrow I am going to pot roast a nice chuck steak, and whatever else I serve with it there will be a Waldorf Salad. Apple Crisp, Waldorf Salad, oh the many, many ways to use an apple which are stored on my cerebral hard drive, after growing up in semi-rural/rural Western Washington State!

I am glad that you had a Happy Birthday li-li, it sounds like Mr. Lisslar was on his toes, good on him, and yay for you!

Okay, I gotta deal with a cat, he came in mud from bow to stern, and he has a gross scab that needs attention. Poor fat old cat, he will get a can of salmon after it’s all over. Ewww, never mind. He just shook his head and the scab came off. When #3 gets home from the dance she’s gonna have to help me peroxide it, yipee skipee. Anyway, I am gone for now.

*Permanent Fund Dividend.

You want your son to have the plague? And he has worked so hard and all!

Off to work-blech.

Another cold, damp, windy morning - and I’m about to go play in the clay. Seems like I was just in Annapolis…

**FCD ** called just a bit ago - they’re up and getting ready for a day at Universal. Daughter’s fiance works there, so they get in for free. I told him not to hurt his neck on any rides - we’ll see if he listens to me.

After clay play, I’ll be coming back to vegetate. Today is supposed to stay yucky, but tomorrow, we’re climbing into the mid-70s. I’ll get some fresh air then.

Well, time to hit the road again.

Oh yeah - kai, way cool about your son!! Sounds like ya done good with him. Gold star for you!

Yay for kai’s son!

The apple crisp was a hit. I was thanked.

Actually I’m being thanked right now. Get yer minds outta the gutter! Sheesh! Breakfast is being prepared for me. I shall now go feast. Later!

Sorry about the ‘Canes, doggio. Yesterday was the Blue Jackets’ first game and they lost too, although it was close and apparently they were up most of the game. It was actually nice to see quite a few people wearing Blue Jackets jerseys at work. It’s generally a sea of OSU fans with a few dissenters. I’m not a big sports fan so I’m more likely to be among the non-conformists…

Good for your son, kai! Glad he’s been able to make so much progress.

I may have to go get some apples for apple crisp today, too.

I like Loki, too, Bobbio, although I’m with you and Mama Tigs on the Floyd one.

It’s cold, but very pretty out today. Not sure how cold it is outside, but it went below 66 inside, because the furnace just kicked on.

I’m still scoping out the weekend plans. I have a lot of work to do. Two last tables to put together, for instance.

Gotta go look for kick-off time so that I don’t get stuck in football traffic when I run errands…

Back after a while.

GT

Hi, all! Just dropping by after checking my bank balance on line and ordering some new checks.

I see we’re all Fall-like today so I will continue the theme by cooking up some nummy beef stew. Not really all that cool here…we’re in the high 80s but, hey, it IS Florida Fall…my favorite season here BTW.

Speaking of Fall, folks down here are decorating for Halloween already. See, you gots to put up plastic blow up decorations on your lawn. It’s a rule. The folks across the street have a giant Winnie-the-Poo vampire blow up. And the folks around the corner have a giant “snow globe” what has lil bats instead of snow. It’s keeee - ute!!

Add me to the list of those wanting to see pics of bobbio’s boxer.

kai, good on you and boy child. Raisin’ up those men chillen is one piece of work, I tells ya.

Gotta gets to the stow.

Tupug

Breakfast was good. Bacon, eggs, grits and toast. I got spoiled.

Now it’s on to cleaning out the garage and cleaning off the back porch. Envy me.

Great Og! I hope not!
Congrats to young Mr Kai-Skiff

oh, and dogbutler? SCL wins.

Good morning everyone!

I have finally drug myself out of bed. I didn’t sleep well and kept waking up. So now I’m extra tired.

kai, the news about your son is terrific! I’d be proud too!

My son brought is progress report home a couple of days ago. Straight As. He was slightly miffed because they don’t put “pluses” on As, only on Bs and below. At any rate, we’re proud of him and he’s a happy camper too. We won’t see progresss report for my daughter until next month.

No big plans for today that I know of. We were supposed to go to my father’s place, but we never heard anything further from him, so I guess we’re not going. At some point this weekend, I’ll probably be providing transportation for my daughter so she can complete her psychology project. She and a partner need to do some sort of survey. She and her partner haven’t decided exactly what kind of survey or test they’re going to do. It’s due Wednesday.

Other than the above, I’ll probably putz around the house. There’s lots that needs doing.

I have a long weekend too, so there’s that to be happy about. I’d like to get the carpets steam cleaned, but it’s difficult to do that when the family is home. I may do that on Monday. Which kinda sucks, because I’d really like Monday to be a “veg” day. Well, what can one do? I can’t kick them out of the house for the day, they wouldn’t go for that.

Tonight’s dinner will be chicken boobies. I’ve just removed them from the freezer.

Okay, I just came in here to comment on man’s generosity to man. And this time I actually mean it.

There’s an Amish market just up the road that runs three days a week (Thursday, Friday, Saturday morning) every week. It’s run and staffed by actual Old Amish from Lancaster County, and it’s enormously popular, as you can imagine – they have incredibly good food of all varieties. We buy all our dairy products, most of our meat, jams & jellies, bread, produce, etc. there – it may cost a bit more, but it’s worth every penny.

So this morning Papa Tigs goes up to do our weekly shopping there and sees the aftermath of the Amish school shootlings this week. The Amish themselves are not taking donations at the counters – but customers have set up donation tables to pay for hospital bills for the injured girls. Thus far, at the various Amish markets around the area, in only three days they’ve collected over $500,000.

And what’s not needed for medical bills? The Amish have stated that it will go to pay for college scholarships for the shooter’s children.

I honestly don’t know if I could display that kind of love and forgiveness, but they’ve certainly set us all a good example, haven’t they?

'Morning Kool Kids!

Just dropping in to say I won’t be dropping in a lot today…

Got some shopping to do, taking in a movie then back to just sit and relax for the day.

:stuck_out_tongue:

Tigs that’s just awesome! Both what the customers are doing and what the Amish have said they’d do with any extra money. Sometimes we do find out there really are good people.

I’m a tahrd bear. ACBG is a tahrd bear too. We cleaned out my garage and cleaned the back porch. Ok, the porch is all wet right now and all the porch furniture is sitting around the pool drying cause it’s wet also. When all that dries I’ll put everything back on the porch. ACBG is going to go to his place and do some paperwork poor thing. We’ve decided we have to go to Backyard Burger for supper tonight. They make good burgers. The reason for all the industriousness, especially with the back porch is, we’re hosting a little soiree next Saturday evening. Plans are for al fresco dining upon the back porch cause the weather’s supposed to cool down. It is a bit cooler today. Yay! I love summer and all cause I’m a summer baby but dangit, it’s time for fall now.

Ima go surf stuff for a while. A nap is also foreseen in the near future.

Tiger, that is really cool.

I’m fixing to go get myself cleaned up and then start cleaning up the house.

Mr. Taters has informed me that he wants to go out to breakfast tomorrow and then get his watch band adjusted to fit him. He also wants to buy a Carhart jacket while we’re at the mall. I told him we need to buy our son a new winter jacket, as he has outgrown his old jacket. That kid is just growing like a weed!

I need to talk to my daughter and see if she contacted her psych project partner so I can find where I need to take her and when.

Off to clean myself up!

I’m going to go get all beautified then out to (a different*) Legal again with a different group of friends (since they couldn’t join us last week)

  • we gots 3 Legal Seafoods here on da Guylandt

Home again, home again…

Class was pretty good today and my work on larger pieces continues. Of course, I’d forgotten that everything shrinks in the kiln, so when they come out, they’re not as big as when they went it, but they’re still pretty good sized. <make your shrinkage jokes here>

I stopped at the grocery on the way home for a few supplies, and I got into the checkout line of the slowest man in the universe. But the place was crowded, so I decided I wasn’t going to line hop. Alas, not only was this guy s-l-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-w, but he’s apparently not real swift with the computerized register. He kept inputting something and it kept squawking at him. I looked at the display where it said that 40 cents was due. I mentioned that. He kept punching the same buttons. Meanwhile, my ice cream was getting melty. And all this while, the woman at the next register processed about half a dozen customers and her line was gone. So I loaded all my stuff back into my cart and went into her line. I got all checked out and paid and everything, and Mr. Zippy was still punching in the same numbers and getting the same noise. He’d called for manager assist, but hadn’t gotten it yet. For all I know, he’s still doing it an hour later.

Moral of the story - do not ever ever ever get in his line. Period.

Apart from the ice cream, I got milk, a calzone for lunch (it was yum) and since they had crab legs on sale (8.98 for 2#) I got a box for my dinner. Double yum! And I got a few other things to get me thru the week.

**FCD ** called from Universal - he was exhausted. He and our daughter stayed up till 2 last night talking, and they got up at 7 this morning to go to the park. I pointed out that if you added daughter’s and fiance’s ages, they were just barely over his age. He was not impressed. Old farts are like that, right swampy?? :stuck_out_tongue: So he hung up on me - some feeble excuse about going into a building…

Anyway, I’ve had lunch and I’m trying to decide if I’m going to go downstairs and play with clay - I think I will for a while. Since I had a late lunch, I’ll be having a late dinner, so I’ve got 3 or 4 hours I can muck about. But first I’m gonna read the funnies and Dear Abby. And post this. And maybe get a little ice cream…

Hush - I can do whatever I want. And I will, too!
