Limit the internet to 10 websites.

What would you pick if you had to limit your internet access permanently to 10 websites?

I don’t know my full 10, but I’d start with:

  1. Amazon
  2. Google (email, Google+, calendar, etc. are still useful even if I can’t go to any search result sites)
  3. Wikipedia
  4. IMDb
  5. Facebook
  6. LiveJournal
  7. SDMB
  1. CNN (you have to have news)
  2. FoxNews (news in different perspective)
  3. Google
  4. Weater.com
  5. Slashdot (tech news)
  6. Amazon
  7. Wikipedia
  8. SDMB (of course)
  9. IMDb
  10. Generic Stock Trading Website

I think you’re going to find some interest in keeping internet porn.

I also would keep Daily Dish with Andrew Sullivan

NYT or something similar.

Wikipedia

IMDb
Wikipedia
YouTube
Netflix
local weather site
college football site
pro football site
generic news site (Yahoo! works for me)

Oh yeah, gotta keep YouTube. Add that to my list.

[li]Straight Dope[/li][li]Amazon[/li][li]Ebay[/li][li]Wikipedia[/li][li]NPR[/li][li]CNN[/li][li]Weather.com[/li][li]Gmail.com[/li][li]Youtube[/li][li]Techsupportalert.com[/li][/ol]

You will notice I didn’t list google.com. Since there would only be 10 web sites, why the need to have a search engine?

For the same reasons listed in the OP.

  1. SDMB
  2. msnbc.com
  3. Amazon
  4. Wikipedia
  5. Youtube
  6. Twitter
  7. GoComics
  8. Hotmail
  9. My Credit Union
  10. My workplace site

NPR.org - news and where I get most of my cultural news
SDMB - of course
Free Jazz institute - my go to site for jazz discussion, analysis and trends (musically speaking)
Amazon
Archive.org - greatest collection of downloadable content in the world
SI.com - gotta have my sports.
Banjohangout.org - for my picking news and info
Reverbnation
Dropbox

SDMB and Wikipedia wouldn’t be nearly as interesting or useful without the research, referencing and networking available elsewhere online, too.

Honestly, if the internet was limited to only ten sites, I suspect I wouldn’t bother to have an internet connection at all. (Keep in mind, other things being equal, this would also mean that there were many more print publications and resources based elsewhere.)

The OP didn’t say the Internet was limited. Only your access to it.

No, it’s just your internet access that is restricted to 10 sites.

If you have listed Wikipedia (and you would have to), surely IMDB is redundant (at least in this scenario)?

I’d exclude SDMB so I could get a lot more done IRL. Not in any particular order:

Wikipedia
Bartcop.com
Amazon
Ebay (but much less so than in the past)

Comcast tv listings
Westlaw
Contra Costa Sup Court
Democratic Underground
SfGate

Couldn’t do it. I’d find a way around it. I’d break into peoples’ houses and steal their internet.

8% of the SDMb admit the internet is for porn…

92% is lying through their teeth.

I don’t use the internet for porn. I’m still trying to find porn that appeals to me.

Tell us exactly what you’re looking for, we’re here to help.

I’ve tried that already. It didn’t help.

IMDB and Wikipedia are redundant. No reason to keep IMDB is you’re keeping Wikipedia, Wiki if the content creators are diligent, can do everything IMDB does on Wikipedia.

If you want to be really practical about it, you could probably say the same thing about CNN (or any general news site) and any other “journalism” website. I love ESPN, but if I was forced to choose 10 websites in the most utilitarian manner I’d probably drop it and stick with CNN because they have a sports section that can provide all the scores, highlights and sports reporting and commentary I really need. Ditto TMZ or any pop culture and entertainment news sites. I’d probably even dump CNN in favor of Yahoo, since their reporting can be almost as comprehensive and they have channels for every niche and the fantasy sports and email come along for the ride.

Weather sites are redundant if you have Google, CNN or Yahoo in the list.

My List:

  1. Wikipedia
  2. Google
  3. Yahoo
  4. Amazon
  5. Facebook
  6. YouTube
  7. Netflix*
  8. ESPN*
  9. SDMB
  10. PornHub…yeah, I said it.
    • These sites could eventually become redundant as discussed above, but I couldn’t think of anything else that really is important enough for me at the moment. At some point a stock trading site would be a really good idea but I’m not there yet. I’m sure Steam or other gaming sites could be a nice fit but for the time being sports and movies are more important.
