Linguistic Question:What's it called when...

Dear Friends, Dopers and Countrymen:

While trying to translate some Japanese martial terminology into Latin, (Only a Doper would try to do this :)) I’ve come across a specific term that has been given a special definition that has now become common to this style of literature.

Is there a word for the phenomenon of a new term being created to define a concept or object and then that term becoming generally accepted.

For example, the word “laser” did not exist until someone working on that particular scientific project coined the term and then, through wider and wider use, the term was accepted by the public.

As my wife says, “Maybe one of your little geeky friends on the Doper Message board can answer your question so you can get back to your REAL job?”

Please help.

However, a good start would be a “neologism.”

Neologism

Thank you, that is the term I wanted.

Given that the originators of the Japanese terms that I am working with believe that personal enlightenment can be achieved through the practice of single combat, I was mildly amused that an alternative use from the Merriam-Webster Dictionary refers to “a meaningless word coined by a psychotic.” That’s a line of research that I’m not going to start

Thanks again
