Linking to a post and not the whole thread

Okay in this thread there is some discussion going on about not linking the whole thread, but to link directly to the post instead. I can link the page, but not directly to the post. I put the cursor over some of the buttons and I am not getting it. My browser doesn’t change and I don’t see any i.d. numbers. Can anyone help make it easier for me to understand?

You’ll find a detailed discussion in this earlier ATMB thread, Ashkicker.

What browser are you using? In most browsers, when you hold the cursor over a link, it’ll show you the address that the link points to at the bottom of the window. For the “edit”, “quote”, or “IP logged” links, that address will end in a number, something like “postid=3184644”. That’s the number you need. If your browser doesn’t show you the address, or if it’s too long to all fit on the screen, you can click the link to go to that page, and the address (complete with post ID number) will be in the “Location” bar at the top of the window. If it’s long, you might need to scroll to the end.

So anyway, you get the post ID number, and maybe copy it onto the clipboard, if that makes it easier for you. Then, you make a link to the thread, but at the end of the address, you add #post and then the post ID number. For instance, http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=172485#post3184644 is the address for your post in this thread.

Like this? Yeah!!! I got it. Whoo-hoo. I was looking at the top window not the bottom window. Thank you very much.
