Linking to past threads

I hope I’m in the proper forum. How can I link to a specific post in another thread?

Click on the small number (#) in the upper right hand corner of the post. That will give you the URL of the post and you can just link to it.

Thank you.

Cool. I’ve wondered that in the past as well.

Possibly even better is the ability to link to the specific post within the thread display.

What Colibri posted above yields this link http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=8246728&postcount=2 displaying a single post.

If you now replace the ‘post’ in the link with ‘thread’ you get:
http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=8246728&postcount=2
which takes you to the full thread but the specific post.
As a cleanup you can also remove the &postcount=2 and get just http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=8246728.

One more note, on the single post views, in the upper right hand corner is the link back to the full thread after the word Thread.

Those instructions are a bit difficult to follow because of the shortening of the full urls with elipses. I’d do it again, spelling out the modifications, perhaps bolding where they can be made, and making sure that the links are not being shortened.

Methinks they have overthunk this feature.

How’s this. The trick to showing the whole link is to 1) uncheck the Automatically parse links box 2) remove any bits already added, and 3) put [i[sub][/sub]][[sub][/sub]/i] between the t’s in http

Just realized there are two easier ways to show a long link.

Just unchecking the Automatically parse links box gives you this:
http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=8246728.
But you can also revel a link and still keep it active by clicking on the link icon and using the link as both the caption for the link and the url itself.
http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=8246728.

There’s a small malfunction that shows up in Firefox when you change “showpost” to “showthread” (without “postcount”). The first line of that post shows up at the bottom of the browser window rather than the top. However, it is still very useful because it takes you to the correct page in a multi-page thread.

The documented method to position to a post on a page (which works in every browser) is this:

[****post=8246728]The above post[/post]

result: [post=8246728]The above post[/post]

Thank you for cleaning that up** According to Pliny** and DSYoungEsq. It looked right in the Preview and I failed to take a close look at it after the submit.
