The last couple versions of MSIE browsers I have installed add a Links folder under the Favorites list. I erase it - it comes back the next time I reboot. I erase - it comes back. I tried moving it so it would sit as a subfolder under another. No luck. Links came back on the main list (shows when you click the Favorites menu).
There’s nothing in it. I erase it - it comes back.
Does anyone else have the problem? Moreover - does anyone know how to get rid of it? (For good!)
While I can’t tell you how to get rid of it, I can confirm that it’s not just something weird about your PC. I’ve seen the same thing, at least since IE 5.x, and now in 6.x. For reasons unknown (to me, at least), they really, really want you to have a “Links” folder on that list!
TweakUI also allows you to get rid of the Links folder. At least it used to. I downloaded it again recently and can’t find that feature now. Maybe if you found last year’s version of TweakUI.
I used to look at that folder as a nuisance too, but I recently found out how useful it is. It controls what shortcuts appear on the Links toolbar. This is usually jammed in just to the right of the Go button on the Address bar. Try dragging it down a little so it has its own line (you may have to turn it on by right-clicking the toolbar, checking Links and unchecking Lock the Toolbars). You can delete Microsoft’s default buttons and drag your own Favorites onto the bar. This allows you to access your most frequently-used pages with a single click.
Even better, you can add folders to the bar. When you click one you get a cascading menu of its contents. This is a great way to organize different categories of links and get to them quickly.
Even cuter, you can change their default icons and use your own icons. Right now I have a row of Christmas icons on my Links toolbar. The SD has Santa’s face, Google is a Christmas wreath, etc. Sometimes the Simpson family dances across the top of my screen, sometimes flowers, scary pumpkins, whatever I feel like. What you CAN delete and keep deleted are the IE links that MS had already put inside the Links folder, so don’t keep those if you don’t want them.
