Thanks to all who so patiently bear with me as I struggle towards vB code mastery. in my defense, I am an artist so mechanical things are NOT my forte, however my posts are getting more technologically advanced. Now if I can just work on that spelling…
But I digress.
How do I change this:
http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?postid=1605337#post1605337
into a word or to and keep the link?
Do like this:
{url=“http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?postid=1605337#post1605337”}Here’s a link{/url}
But change the { and } to [ and ]
You’ll end up with: Here’s a link
Hit the quote button, and you should be able to see the correct coding.
Three hints, WG:
-
The quotation marks before http and at the end are vitally important. Without those four tiny scraps of pixels, the link won’t make. And it’s sometimes confusing because the older version of board software, UBB, did not need these quotation marks, but vBulletin does. So if you’re used to UBB, it’s a change.
-
It won’t work if the [url part of it is the very first item in a post–it needs at least a carriage return in front of it.
-
Use Preview to check to see whether the link made. It’ll work from the Preview window.
That is, if you did it right.
This saves you the so-embarrassing “oops! would some kind-hearted mod please fix that?” second post.
Test formatted URL at the beginning of post. There was a problem at one time, but does it work now?

So the previous try did work, but does automatic detection of a URL work at the beginning of a post?
Hmm. Both worked. Looks like that bug was fixed.
DDG, it was point 2 that was throwing me. Sheesh, talk about frustrating…
…
Wow.
I just learned it, too.
