Posting links

For some reason, I’ve been having trouble lately getting my links to work. Specifically, the links look fine as I type them in but when actually clicking on them - either in preview or later in the actual post - the url of the SDMB gets added to the front of the address, which means that the link doesn’t work. (If you then select the address and delete the leading SDMB url it will get you there). An example of this is in my recent post to the White Nationalist thread in GD (posted a few minutes ago).

What is causing this, and how do I get around it?

My apologies if this has been asked before.

When you include a link, make sure that you leave in the http:// part.

I did. Here’s the post I referred to.

And I see on preview that my link here has the same problem.

” ” ” ” ” ” = your quotation marks

" " " " " " = vBulletin’s preferred quotation marks

“ “ “ “ “ “ = alt+0147

” ” ” ” ” ” = alt+0148

You’re using the wrong quotation marks. All of yours, both opening and closing are the ASCII character alt+0148.

Thank you, UncleBeer! Do you happen to know what causes it? (I did not type alt+0148. Though I may have typed it in another program and pasted).

IzzyR - that happens to me in programs (such as Microsoft Word) where I type in the link, and the program default is to change “dumb” quotes to “smart” quotes. You must have typed it in another program and then pasted. I can see that because you also have a smart quote in your post in “Here’s”.

Yup. Does it every time. Damned low-grade annoyance is what it is. One a these days I’ll figure out how to turn it off.

I would also add here that you don’t need to put any quotes around the address in the {url} code.

eg {url=http://www.foo.com}link{/url} will work fine, as will {url="http://www.foo.com}link{/url}. (with square brackets, obviously.

I never use the quote marks.

Indeed. The quotes used to be required in the previous version of VB, but now all they can possibly do is screw you over. OTOH, at least this version of VB fixed the preview/title/quote bug.

Really?
You don’t have to use

(http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=140609) marks anymore?

Hey! It works!
