Lipstick Lesbians

The terms “butch” and “femme” also applies to gay men, although usually not in the sense of roles in a relationship. A butch gay man is a “masculine” one, and a femme gay man is a more “effeminate” one (like myself). Actually, I prefer the terms butch and femme over masculine and feminine, on the basis that masculine means “acting like a man”, and being a man, I act like a man (i.e. myself) all the time, whether I’m acting butch or femme.

handy– Fair enough. I guess I am taking a more academic/gay-history approach here. And I dunno what those women in Hustler and Penthouse are!! But that site is fun. Thanks for the link.

If you (or anyone else for that matter) are interested in learning more about lesbian history, 2 good books are Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers by Lillian Faderman and Boots of Leather, Slippers of Gold by Kennedy and Davis.

Chronos: Am I counted as one of the “three or more lesbians?”

Got my lesbian history in the 80’s, you don’t think that it’s changed too much since then do you? I know sign language has so I needed to take sign language again this year in college.

My friend said I should read Dworkin’s book, Women hating, but when she bought the book for me, she kept it for herself to read

Yeah, a lot has changed since the eighties. I mean a lot. The field of gay and lesbian history was so underdeveloped at that point that it practically didn’t exist.

And what does that have to do with sign language?

p.s. I have never actually read Dworkin, but I would like to.
