It’s the little luxuries in life that make a huge difference. What little luxuries have you recently discovered that make your life better?
I recently discovered Dickies Socks. I don’t know why, but these are the best socks I’ve ever had. Even better, Amazon Prime had them on sale and you could get a 4-pair pack for $10.47. Outrageous compared to store prices. I ordered a set and told my parents to order an additional set for me for Christmas.
Here is what I ordered if you care. No, I’m not affiliated with Amazon or Dickies socks. I just love them that much. I see they are not as cheap now, but still on a small sale.
Best socks I’ve owned.
Anyone have anything else? Hook us up with deals if you know of any or just tell us stuff that makes life great.
Discovered that maybe 6 months ago- hot foot baths (with Epsom salt and scented oil) in the evening. Technically, you can get a foot-soaking tub that has bubbles and a water heater, but a good 'ol metal basin works just as well. Especially if you have an electric kettle on hand, to heat up additional water.
Smells nice, isn’t too much trouble, and feels divine.
Space heater designed for a bathroom (extra safety features for an environment with water nearby) that comes with both a thermostat and a timer - I can set it to start 15 minutes before I wake up and no more cold toilet seat! Warms up the bathroom so showers in winter are much more pleasent. Can heat just the one room hotter than the rest of the apartment when I need it to be warm without blowing the heating budget overall.
Magiglide furniture gliders. Do you know that rough, screeching sound your chairs make when you push them to, or away from the table? How much that sounds always gives you a mini-moment of nails on chalkboard? And how you’ve gotten by with rapidly deteriorating, or pet hair attracting, patches of felt under your chairs legs?
Magiglide furnuture gliders have a teflon coating, and a patented system to attacht them to your chairs legs. They make your chair glide like a smooth, silent swan over your wood, tile or carpet floors.
Ghiradelli dark chocolate (60%) I never even liked dark chocolate until I tasted this. Not cheap, but I buy a bag of the individual squares and eat one a day.
I buy the chocolate chips sold in the baking section. Cheaper and just as yummy.
Expensive luxury: Chilipad heating/cooling pad for our bed. It sits over the mattress and allows each of us to set our own preferred temperature. First, I like vastly different temp than the hubby, so this is nice. Second, we can just set the pad to heat or cool, and not heat or cool the entire house. I adore this thing.
Littler life luxuries: I like finding local roasting companies for coffee and trying them out. Sipping a good cup of coffee with a cat or dog cuddled up, while reading or surfing the Internet is definitely a luxury.
That’s what I was coming to say. My daughter and I just tried this a couple weeks ago which is crazy because I’ve been through surgery on both of my feet. She recently had ingrown toenails removed and the podiatrist told her to soak them. We both tried the Epsom salts, we agreed it was wonderful, in fact, we are both home Friday and I said to her we should have a nice relaxing day and soak our feet.
The good cuts of steak. I splurged for porterhouse once when it was only a buck or so more expensive than the lesser cuts and it was so amazing that I don’t want to try the other cuts besides porterhouse and the like again. On the downside, I am no longer as impressed with steakhouse’s steaks since mine taste almost as good for a third the price.
And let me add that my 75 year old tiny weak mother and 80 year old father can move their recliners from the tv to the fireplace with no problem using these.
Are these different that regular gliders I use to move furniture? We put them under our kitchen table legs because our kitchen table is from ~1890 and is super heavy wood.
Ours are like this. I move them out from the table if I need to slide the fridge or stove out. Or move something seriously heavy.
Real maple syrup. On homemade [not from mix] pancakes or french toast. I would rather have an elaborate breakfast once a month with prime ingredients than feast every day on cheap fake crap poured over a box mix pancake. It isn’t that much more difficult to make them from scratch with quality ingredients but being diabetic I also am careful of what I eat. I would rahter stick to my regular breakfast [oatmeal not from instant and not loaded with sugar] and be healthy with planned excursions into a special occasion breakfast.
Maybe I should amend that to be making sure that you live well by knowing when to scrimp and eat cheap meat and when to eat frugal by knowing how to plan a menu and shop, which allows an occasional special meal. I wouldn’t want to eat duck or steak every night, but several times a year work out nice at making me appreciate teh time and effort that goes into a special meal. Just because I may have a mixed green salad with poached chicken, walnuts and diced apple [homemade olive oil balsamic vinaigrette] which is not overly expensive doesn’t mean that I am not going to enjoy the prime rib we are cooking for Christmas … I poach the chicken myself, make the dressing myself and buy good base ingredients which are not overly expensive. Just because you think it looks like something you might get at McDonalds doesn’t mean it is from McDonalds … and I think overall it is just slightly less expensive than eating at McDonalds to do it all myself.
They look pretty similar in fabric/style to my Dickies socks. I spent years with thinner dress socks for work. I will never go back, having thicker, high quality socks. I don’t even think Dickies is a “top brand”. They are just really comfortable.
I have many, but, change french toast to made from scratch waffles and this meal is certainly in the top 3 for me and Mrs. Guest.
A good whisky, other spirits, or whatever your adult beverage of choice is, a cool spring or warm autumn evening, a small bonfire and conversation with close friends and family is a biggie for me.
Under Armour brand T shirts. They’re awesome to wear during sultry weather because they wick away heat and moisture so efficiently. They also make prime undergarments when it’s cold and damp out, as they don’t let you get clammy and moist.
We have an Under Armour outlet store nearby so we get them at a good discount, too. I’m sold.
As a 69-year-old guy, I never had a pedicure until this last Spring, when instead of dropping my wife off at the day spa I went in and had one with her. 90 minutes of pampering, including foot and lower leg massage. Ever since, we’ve gone back together.
I think it fills a self-indulgent space that has been empty these last 18 years that I have been shaving my head. Before, with hair, going to the barber was a relaxing and satisfying event. Having someone messing with my scalp, and especially in the old days of the 50s and 60s with the electric hand scalp massager at the end of the process, drained any tension left over from school or work.
The process has just moved from one end to the other.
