Little life luxuries you only recently discovered

I am the queen of small luxuries. It’s the little things in life.

Dark chocolate kit-kat bars. Seriously, you all have to try these.

The nicer paper napkins. Like these. I keep them in my office and my car now. They are larger, and thicker, and more absorbent, and I don’t go through seventeen of them like I do with the cheapo ones.

And these are the world’s most perfect socks. Cotton, over-the-calf (so they don’t slide down!),long-lasting. I won’t pay $10 a pair though. Once every five years or so they go on sale for about $4 each, and I buy a dozen each of black, navy, and natural. Done. Not another thought about socks for five years.

Dollar store gel pads for shoes. Like these, but inexpensive. Ladies, if you are going to wear heels for goodness’ sake put some of these under the ball of your foot. Big fat ladies like me are not supposed to be comfortable in heels, but I am.

I bow before your greatness, thou human with self-restraint. My Ghiradelli is half gone by the time I leave the store parking lot, and is but a distant memory by the time I arrive home.

I recently began buying meals from a home delivery service. I have zero appetite, and hate food shopping and cooking with a passion.

Now every Friday I have three differents meals, two servings each, delivered to my door. Everything is included. Simple recipes, high quality meat, and I’m in and out of the kitchen in 45 minutes max.

Maybe not a little luxury, but I’m only 100# and really can’t afford to lose weight.
My favorite little pleasure is stepping outside at night and seeing Orion taking up half the sky.

More of a rediscovery, but it is so much nicer to eat by yourself than with three coworkers who keep talking over each other. And the team isn’t complete yet…

I love a good clear night out on the farm, take the zero gravity chair out and flake back to watch the sky. I just bought a wallpaper panorama of a starfield that glows in the dark, we are going to paint the ceiling to match the background color and arrange it so we will have a starry night every night )

Really nice whiskey. Not hundreds of dollars a bottle stuff, but a bottle of top-shelf level stuff you can quietly enjoy in moderation by yourself from time to time.

ditto, my tipple of choice was Balvenie 21 year old portwood, but seeing as that is now pushing £150 a bottle I’m looking around for other options. I prefer something smooth, old and sherry-influenced.
Currently test-driving a bottle of Glenalba 22 year old from lidl of all places. Really enjoying it and glad to see that others are in agreement. Can’t go wrong for 30 quid.

Also, life is too short to eat bad seafood. Get it fresh and pay what it costs.

Pusser’s rum. It’s almost $50 a bottle at my store, but is a fun indulgence for when I want to treat myself. Very smooth with lots of caramel flavours.

They used to claim to be the only rum made according to the British Navy recipe but I see they’ve dropped that from their website, so I wonder if someone raised an objection. I wondered why the British Navy would have a recipe for rum at all. Grog recipe, sure, but rum?

Scotch. I tasted it years ago and disliked it, but now that my tastebuds have started to die off, I find single malts delicious.

Well, if “recently” can be 10 years… heated marble floor in the master bathroom. I hate cold hard floors but wanted marble on the floor and around the tub. OMG! It’s far and away my favorite room in the winter.

Water bottle, i used to drink from a mug but this is bigger and much more practical

How much is the meal thing? Is it Blue Apron you use?

Bamboo clothing. The stuff is amazing, its soft and light and breathes. Due to the nature of the fabric, it doesn’t make good dress clothing, but when it comes to socks, under ware, pajamas and casual tops? Wonderful!

Thanks for the tip; I’ll see if they sell Glen Alba over here. If you liked the Balvenie portwood you might try Dalmore 15. USD75 the bottle here whereas that Balvenie goes for ~USD220. So on that ratio the Dalmore ought to be £50 or a bit less for you.

Another thing I’ve recently started using almost every day: those microwavable heating pads that are filled with flax seeds and rice. I use them on my neck and shoulders, or on my back. They feel so good, and they aren’t expensive at all. 2 minutes or so gets them toasty warm. You can get them with plain cotton or with a nice, fuzzy fleece. I prefer mine unscented, but if you like aromas, like lavendar, they come that way too.

I sometimes stick a warmed up one under the covers by my toes at night. Nice warm tootsies to fall asleep with.

At the recommendation of my massage therapist, I plunked down almost $200 for a TempurPedic pillow. I was raised not to spend a lot on things like that, so I tossed the $5 Target pillow off the bed and slept on this thing. Oh my god. I had no idea. I haven’t woken up with a crick in my neck since. Now I’ll drag it everywhere with me even though it must weigh ten pounds. Totally worth every penny.

For some reason, this makes me grin. And be happy. Maybe it’s just reading that you be 69 and still learn to appreciate new things. It’s good. I like this.

I use Home Chef. It’s $59 + change for 3 meals, that’s six servings. Everything, down to the last little caper, is included. The beef and pork are wonderfully tender. Veggies are fresh. I’ve had to laugh at the little containers that hold 3 springs of rosemary or 1 tbsp of ground ginger. Mostly all I need to supply are olive oil, salt and pepper.

Price-wise, HC is the same price as Blue Apron. Blue Apron has been having some compliance issues, but I believe all the i’s and t’s have been dotted and crossed.

Shipping is free for 3 meals. No contract. Skip deliveries. Delivered by FedEx and you don’t have to be home to receive it.

When I lived way far out in the country, I’d walk back to the house after tucking my horse in and the stars covered the sky. Where I am now there’s so much ambient light I can see only the big constellations. Orion is my all time fave.

Those ceiling stars have been on my list for years. Time I did something about it.

Oh yeah. There is something very relaxing and intimate about tending a fire and talking.
