Little life luxuries you only recently discovered

Yardley Jasmine hand soap. I love scented soaps for washing my hands. It’s very nice. After I discovered it, I bought a whole bunch.

 I’m going to check this out.

If you put a couple of cups of white vinegar in the soaking water, calluses just melt off. Water must be hot and you soak for about 1/2 hour. You can use vinegar and scented oil.

Another nice option is Lindt. They make a variety of flavors but I’m partial to their basic 70% dark: http://www.lindtusa.com/shop/chocolates/chocolate-bars-and-sticks/70-cocoa-excellence-bar

Our local grocery stores sell them for about $2.80 for a bar of 10 squares. Much cheaper than the their website’s prices. The nutrition label says 4 squares is a serving, but I can’t imagine anyone except a binging chocoholic eating more than two and one is plenty for me. They’re even low enough in sugar that diabetics can eat them with no impact.

I’m not turning this into a recipe thread, but I will share my little luxury that I find to be very luxurious. You have to like Sriracha for this to be worthwhile, but I make Peanut-Butter Sriracha Cookies.

Here. It’s easy as long as you have the ingredients. Make them big and they still come out fine.

Trust me.

Where do you find the dark chocolate Kit Kats? I had a fun sized one last year at Halloween and couldn’t find them again, never saw them in stores.

The answer to buying damn near anything and everything, which I’m still learning myself, is Amazon. Many sizes, free shipping, etc.

Plus the luxury of point-click-no-driving buying. Another one of life’s little luxuries. I try to shop local. I’ll try two stores for mainstream stuff or 3 for oddball stuff. After that, they snoozed, they loosed. It’s Amazon as soon as I get back home. My life has gotten better (and not much more expensive) since I adopted this habit.

Polish dark chocolate candy filled with liquor. I don’t think this requires any further explanation.

Oh, yes! I know people are posting about using linen napkins, and I wish I had a stack of old, soft, linen napkins, but I don’t. I did splurge once and get the expensive paper napkins, and what a difference. They’re what I buy now, and they are large enough and absorbent enough to do the job, as well as being soft enough to make them a pleasure to use.

Even my husband is amazed at the difference, and in 44 years of marriage the quality of, or lack of, our table linens has never been anything he has felt the need to comment on, but he likes these.

There’s nothing like a halfway decent paring knife.

Looks just the ticket and indeed it comes in at around £50 here.

I think I’ll give it a go when the Glenalba is gone and report back.

Glad to help a fellow scotch fan.

Sadly the GlenAlba seems to be a house brand of Lidl. Who is not yet operating in the US, but hopes to start some day. So that tasting will have to wait until my next trip to Britain.

Which heater did you get?

I’ve never used a space heater before, but our bathroom sure could use something - the shower wall is a poorly-insulated outside wall and it gets pretty cold in winter. I’m having a bit of trouble zeroing in on something that looks safe and reliable, however, as consumer reports and other review sites that I’ve looked at haven’t really addressed heaters specifically for the bathroom.

Anyone have a solid recommendation?

A Swell Water Bottle.

Ms. Cups and I will put ice in it and fill it to the brim before heading out to the theme parks and it keeps our water ice-cold for hours.

And not regular hours. Stuck-in-a-backpack-at-Disney-for-6-hours-at-a-time-in-the-summer cold.

We’ve even left it in the car and it’s been cold.

We picked up a set of bamboo sheetson our cruise. Luxurious and they do make the bed cooler.

I also got Ivylad to come with me for a pedicure. I find it a lovely bit of pampering for not a lot of money…much cheaper than a massage, which is nice too.

I had this problem in my basement shower. I installed a heated floor. The heat is electric and goes under the floor tiles. It’s fantastic for when I have houseguests in winter. The tile holds the heat so the cost isn’t a big issue.

You know what else is cheaper than a massage? A massage …

… from the Chinese family giving chair massages at the mall. I decided I really don’t have the money (or the time) for a real massage therapist.

But I can run over to the mall after work, walk up to the biggest “dads” in the massage family and ask “So, who wants to hurt me?” $18 for 15 minutes, but they go deeper and do more good than an hour of some weak-fingered hippie who’s used to rubbing her cats.

I agree with everyone on the sock love. A year ago I tried Darn Tough socks from a family business in Vermont, because they have a lifetime guarantee. So far they are wearing well, and come in nice colors. I asked for more for Christmas.

Another luxury I’ve become addicted to is wicked good but expensive cinnamon. I used to be happy with big bottles for a dollar at Ocean State Job Lots, but once I tried the Penzey’s Vietnamese Cinnamon I was spoiled.
