Yep- in an awful way, this is vindication for Blair. But, since I think he has a conscience, I doubt he is happy about the method or the results. IOW, I don’t think he is sighing relief or chortling with glee. (whereas I can easily see Rove et al high fiving one another over 9/11, but that’s irrelevant to the thread).
I find the whole “be safe” thing so strange anyway. Everyone spouts it, but then complains about the lines, the wait and the security checks at airports-so much that aren’t they(USA) gonna put in place some kind of list for those who travel frequently, and once you’re on it, no more lines for you? And then, of course, the terrorists will find a way around that and do this again…
I don’t have any answers, really, but I do think we need to fundamentally reassess how we conduct business, foreign policy and look at the ways in which culture is trasmitted globally. I don’t mean cowtow to these morons, but something must change for more safety to be had.
My ex was sitting around her office, near Liverpool Street, unable to leave the building due to a threat of a bomb in the building next door (which turned out to be fake).
So what did her cow-orkers do? They organized a piss up and started cracking bottles of beer and wine they had around the office. She didnt’ manage to get home until 3 am after hooking up with some other friends in Central London who did the same thing!
The thought that your average London company has enough bottles of liquor around the office for an impromptu piss-up doesn’t surprise me at all, for some reason.
I just want to add that, despite that little dust-up our two countries had back in the late 1770s, British folks are among the finest and most admirable folks on earth in the face of adversity.
I saw a political cartoon that shows Hitler, still reeking with the flames of Hell, telling a terrorist, “Bombing London will get you nowhere.” Lots of other cartoons on that site as well, with several excellent Winston Churchill references.
