Interesting question, because I’m in the same situation.
I’ve applied for a job about two hours from home and just yesterday received an e-mail inviting me down next week to “do lunch and get acquainted”, which to me means likely that the job is mine if I want it and if we get off. After all, it’s not likely that one would invite someone to lunch two hours away if there was no interest at all in hiring them, right?
It’s a smaller city (more like a big town, actually), and looks like an interesting job. I’m not a certified dyed-in-the-wool urbanite, and actually, where I am now seems to be saturated with my profession, so it’s a promising opportunity.
However, my SO is in a situation where currently she is working a job she loves – she is challenged, gets along with her workmates, the bosses give credit where it is due and respect their employees (totally contrary to the last two jobs she worked), and has let it be known that she doesn’t really want to leave her job.
So, if I get the job, I’ll have to make a decision as to what to do along these same lines. We have talked about it, and have come to the conclusion that if I do get the job, I’ll take an apartment there and come home on the weekends. It was a no-brainer decision in our case, and something that we were familiar with, since when we were growing up, both of our fathers did this, and we know that it’s workable.
