Clearly, everything is not on the Internet.
I’m looking for a cartoon from, oh, 30 years ago. I’m 99% sure it’s by Kliban.
A man is sitting at the counter at a diner, and he is handing a huge wad of bills to the waitress. There’s a plate with what’s left of a piece of pie in front of him. The caption reads:
“OK, but if you ask me, $10,000 is a lot for a slice of pie!”
I’d like to get a scan of this, if anyone has it in their collection.
Beowulff, I had some time to kill this afternoon so I googled your cartoon. The closest I came was two Kliban cartoons set in diners: one has the punchline, “We’re out of kosher pickles” and the other’s punchline is, “What did the city of New York do with King Kong?” I expect you saw these, too, in your search, but if either would serve your purpose, I’ll send you links.
I did find a Kliban fangroup on Facebook: The B. Kliban Appreciation Society at The B. Kliban Appreciation Society | Facebook. Maybe they can help?
I googled '“OK, but if you ask me, $10,000 is a lot for a slice of pie!” and got exactly one hit - this thread!
Waltzes-
Thanks for that suggestion.
I scrolled back 5 years or so, and didn’t see it. I’m not on Facebook, but I may join just to post the question - that group seems to be a good resource.
I do have the book that has Continuous Eye Persons in it.
I have the book it was published in, Cats, somewhere.
What did the city of New York do with King Kong?" is one of the best Kliban cartoons.
But the all-time funniest is “The callous sophisticates laughed at Judy’s tiny head.” Which always cracks me up for some reason. I think it’s Judy’s clenched fists.
I’m not a Kliban scholar or anything, but I have been a fan since about 1975. I do have all of his published books that I know of,tho, and this doesn’t ring a bell for me as being something I recognize from any of his books.
Nope. I went thru my copy of Cats and this isn’t there. I haven’t gone thru all of his other books yet, but like I say this isn’t something I remember from Kliban’s books.
dang - the three BK books I have - “Two Guys Fooling Around With the Moon”, “Tiny Footprints”, and “Cat” all came up short.
pronounced “Klee-buhn”, btw
As i said, I’m almost certain it’s Kliban, but it’s been so long, that it could have been an artist with a similar style.
But, I really think it was him.
Thanks for all the help so far, folks.
Is the callous sophisticate on the left meant to be Oscar Wilde?
Could be. I’ve never parsed the Callous Sophisticates.
Yep. It’s an obvious one.
Yup, it’s Oscar. What about the other three?
No, the one on the right. The hulking monster with the bad combover.
Agreed. Nicely subtle.
His best work was outside the Cats, too. I’m partial to “And bring some shit for my fly,” “Hardw,” and “The Victim’s Family.”
I definitely remember the pie cartoon. IIRC, it was in Playboy about 30 years ago.
Maybe the caption was “… a lot for pie and coffee”? :dubious:
Now that makes it actually funny:
Customer: “If you ask me, $10,000 is a lot for a slice of pie!”
Waitress: "And coffee!"
This is Oscar Wilde. Definitely the guy on the left. And he had a full head of hair; no need for a combover.
Did anybody else notice that Judy and one of the female c.s.'s have camel toes?
