A year and a half ago, a friend saw a version of THE SNOW QUEEN on her local PBS in Boise, Idaho. She said it seemed to be a pretty professional production with bright popping colors and amazing cinemetography. We purchased a used VHS which seemed to fit the listing, but it was a very poor quality production with animated effects interspersed with live action. So how could we find what she actually saw? Has anyone seen any version & could tell us what we might be looking for?
Seems likely it was this one from the Hallmark Channel, considering the awards it got. Here’s the (crappy quality) trailer, it seems to be set in the wrong era. And wrong locality. And not actually be the traditional story at all.
But lookee! A list!
FWIW, in 2006, PBS stations were showing the 2005 version of The Snow Queen, with Juliet Stevenson and Patrick Stewart.
I have a VHS copy of the 1990s rerelease of the 1957 Soviet animated film. The animation style looks older… in some ways, it’s reminiscent of the earliest Disney features. I find it interesting, but I’m a big fan of old animation – others might be left cold by it. Also, in the version I have, the crow character is voiced in an embarrassing black stereotype.
Still, I’ve loved the story since I was a little kid… I have an old edition of the book with incredible Art Deco illustrations that look like something out of a fever dream. One of my most treasured possessions.
