Looking for a watch...

It appears as if I am in the market for a new watch. Mine went crazy last night, and while I thought I fixed it, it appears as if I “broke” the beeper, so it now has no alarm.

I think I’m probably very picky about watches. The last few times I’ve looked at watches in the stores, I haven’t found anything I like. I don’t want a basic analog watch because I like the feature of having a stopwatch and alarm. And all the digital watches I’ve seen lately look goofy, with oversized digital numerals and other stupid stuff.

Here’s a picture that’s CLOSE to what I have now:

Mine has a grey face and black leather strap, but feature-wise, I think they’re the same. It has day, date, alarm, 2 time zones, chronograph, and my favorite feature, a count-down timer.

This one was about $35 when I bought it 2 -3 years ago.

I had the same model before this one, and it also died an odd death. It started beeping uncontrollably, and I couldn’t get it to stop. In an effort to shut it up, I removed the back, thinking I could take out the battery until I could get it to a jewelrs. Unfortunately, the whole works came out the back and went into pieces. Dead watch.

The one I have now started the crazy beeping thing again last night. I was near a jewelery store, so I took it in and they made it stop. But now the beep doesn’t work at all.

So…I’m looking for a replacement. I don’t think I’ll try the same model again, as this one seems to have a flaw I can’t deal with.

I don’t want to spend a lot of money - under $50 if possible.

I don’t mind either a leather-type strap, or a metal strap. But I don’t want a pocket watch.

Suggestions?

I bought a Wrangler Hero Metal Bracelet watch at KMart a few years ago. Analog with digital window where the 3 would be, and on the left side of the face arranged in a triangle are 3 function windows, the day window where the 9 would be. It has a stopwatch, alarm, hour chime, and 24hr display. Hands glow and the digital lights up at the press of a button. Cost me maybe $20, and I’ve had it for over 2 years problem free. The exact same style watch came branded as Joe Boxer, and cost $5 more.

If you must go digital I recommend lookingat the Nike Triax series. I thought these watches were substantially overpriced until I used one, but they are suprisingly good, and much better than your usual digital (Casio, Timex etc) WRT visual clarity, backlighting, and logic of functions. They also have a mineral glass lens face which is less subject to scratching than a plastic face.

Nike Triax digital watches are around 70- 150 retail, but are often half that (new) on Ebay as the models change rapidly.

I have two Seiko watches-one dress and one everyday. The everyday is just under 30 years old, and the only thing which failed is the backlighting-it’s LCD display, but it’s the best darn $35 watch I’ve ever seen.

How about a catapult watch?

My SO had several of those Timex watches, and they all died mysterious Screaming Deaths (man, thats annoying, isn’t it?)

Don’t buy Timex!

Levis Strauss has some nice digita/analog watches. I couldnt find it on their website, but the one I bought for my SO last Christmas came from the Bay. It has a leather band, and a nice metallic blue face. He loves it. I hope you can find one!

i have a timex 19281 model . its completely analog, but has an indiglo light and an alarm. i love it. YMMV

I’ve noticed that the Timex website does have a pretty nice search engine for all the features you might want in a watch. I’m just worried now that all Timex watches with alarms will suffer from the “screaming death”…
