Lost 2.10: "The 23rd Psalm"

Things That are Currently Annoying Me:

Bernard asking Eko- a Black African man if he had pulled any “African American” bodies from the water. Weirdly PC. I could understand if he was asking Michael, but to use that particular choice of words with Eko is just odd. I know, I obsess about irrelevant details.

The fact that there is a whole bunch of heroin lying around the island and the doctor (or Locke, or anyone else) didn’t twig that it might be really useful for analgaesia. Medical heroin (diamorphine) is used in palliative care. Boone could have really done with some pain relief when he was dying (or, you know, when Jack was about to cut his leg off). Sawyer probably wouldn’t have minded some either when he was all fever-ridden in the bed. OK, it’s not pure, but it’s probably about the only pain killer left on the island, and people keep getting into painful situations.

Is Charlie supposed to be using again? Was that randomness about the Kinks supposed to signify that he was high? If it was, you can tell that the people who made this haven’t seen anyone high on heroin.

Other than that I love where all this is going, and Mr Eko is a great warlord and a pretty nifty priest- although Uganda and the LRA would have made more sense than Nigeria and some random “rebels”.

This bothered me too for a while - but I was reminded that at the time that Boone was dying, Jack didn’t know about the heroin on the plane. I don’t recall Locke mentioning it, and Boone was in no condition to. For Sawyer, I think perhaps Jack wouldn’t even have considered it, because he doesn’t know what else might be in there to cause further complications (and also because on some primal Darwinian level, Jack kind of wants the herd to thin, just a wee little passive-aggressive bit, to improve his odds with Kate).

For that matter … we are meant to assume that those are baggies full of heroin - and certainly that’s what Eko believes they are - but with all the other weird shit that’s going on, how do we know what’s really there? We haven’t seen Charlie use since the crash, have we (except in flashbacks)? Do we have any reason to think it might not actually be what we think that it is (other than, say, every other not-as-it-seems thing that’s happened up to this point)?

See, I’m being pragmatic here, impure heroin is probably worth the risk in a life-or-death situation or when someone is in severe pain. Considering that they are on an island and all.

You can make a weighing scale with a penny, a pencil and some string that would enable you to weigh out tiny quantities of the drug, then all you have to do is give the person enough to control their pain without out causing respiratory depression (which you could monitor by counting their breaths). Oral heroin is unlikley to cause an overdose.

I’ve overthought this, haven’t I…

There are also the points that it was Ana Lucia’s people who found Jin in the surf, so if it hadn’t been for her group, he would have drowned, and that it was Ana Lucia’s decision to find the larger group, so even if Jin had survived to get to the island, he probably wouldn’t have made his way back to Sun, at least not as soon. So, they’re probably kind of grateful for everything she’s done, aside from shooting Shannon, who, to be honest, was kind of a useless bitch, whereas Jin and Sun have both been working their asses off trying to keep things together.

I don’t think he is. I think he stashed the virgin Mary statues as a “just in case” kind of thing. He thinks he might need them later, so he stashed them for himself. Of course, he’ll probably go back to using in the next few episodes, or at least use once and then get re-redeemed.
I think the writing regarding his addiction is done very well. Charlie isn’t a bad character, but the fact that he’s a junkie makes him lie and manipulate people he cares about without feeling much guilt about it. He’s the drug addict equivilent of a “dry drunk.”

This may the one thing in the entire series thus far that has been perfectly clear.

I don’t understand why people are accepting that anyone’s “talking” to Michael at all, much less that it’s Walt.

In the episode I saw, the screen was blank from Jack’s POV, while it had lots of text on it from Michael’s. No one’s talking to Michael at all - he’s losing his mind and hallucinating. (Which is further suported by his apparent actions in the previews.)

I just had this conversation with a friend of mine. I didn’t consider the possibility that he was imagining it or hallucinating until my friend pointed it out. I thought perhaps that the imperfect computer had shut down the chat session and left the screen blank.
I like the theory that it’s all in his head though. I hope they’re exploring the madness brought on by the mysterious sickness.

I thought that Michael may have switched off the monitor. He didn’t hit any keys because we’d have heard that noisy keyboard but the way he had his hands up on the desk he could have reached over slightly and turned the monitor off.

Does the computer screen go blank when not in use? A monitor of that type would need a screen saver to avoid burn in.

That computer setup predates screensavers, and should be thoroughly burnt in by now. Since the only thing that’s been typed on the screen for twenty years is the numbers, you should be able to see them when the screen is “blank”.

I’m going with this for the time being. Otherwise, Michael comes off as kind of an asshole.

Somebody remind me because the episode in question has already been erased ( to make room for some anime I presume) from my DVR. When we see Eko for the first time, is he emerging from the water? As in baptism/rebirth symbolism?

Gosh. No! Really???

Can’t have that!

Have you seen Michael’s backstory episodes?

Yes, when we first see him, he’s coming out of the water. He’s also not dressed like a priest, in case anyone was wondering. He was wearing a standard dark suit with a white shirt. No tie.

I was surprised when I saw him coming out of the water. When I heard he was joining the cast, I guessed that he was a survivor of the Nigerian Plane Crash.

Oh, he survived it all right. Just not in the way I thought he would!

Yeah, I agree that it would be boring if, every time someone saw something crazy, they immediately ran and told everyone else. But I wish we’d see an occasional snippet of it… like, 10 seconds of people arguing over where to add something to the “big-ass chart of unexplained crap” or something. Something so that we know that these people still have curiosity…

There was a conversation in the last episode before the break (between Hurley and Jack or Charlie) that made me smile. They basically gave the run down of the weird stuff that was happening.

I agree with you. I don’t want a scene every time something happens, but every now and then, an outburst or conversation is appreciated.

Shit, with that monitor, Desmond should have died from a brain tumour.

I’ve been screaming that Michael is a total asshole from day one. He just gets a pass because of WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALT.

I keep hoping that fucker will die painfully.
