Lost 2.17: "Lockdown"

Anybody notice that the Tailsection’s map version has a bit around the 5 o’clock range that says “Known Final Resting Place of Magnus Hanso … Black Rock”?

I’m going to be studying this sucker all day.

I have to say, I’m fairly disappointed that Locke fell for his father’s bullshit again. If it were me, I would have ended the episode differently:

Locke gives his dad the bag, and says, “I didn’t do this for the money.” Dad goes to the door and opens it, and instead of Helen, it’s the two thugs. Locke: “Like I said.” Dad turns around in shock. Locke says to the thugs: “Seven hundred thousand, right? It’s all here.” Dad: “How could you?” Locke: “You died. Something changed in me. You no longer matter. You dug your grave, now lie in it.” And he leaves. Then, on the way out to his car, he runs into Helen, who has followed him and is just starting to come up. He tries to explain himself, but she sees Dad come out of the room accompanied by the two thugs, and she confronts Locke about his lie. Locke tries to explain what’s going on, and proposes, but she’s having none of it. So he takes control of his life, rejects his father, and does the right thing, and Helen leaves him anyway.

I think that would have been more satisfying, but maybe that’s just me and my fucked-up relationship with my own father talking.

Boy, there is a lot of good stuff there. EW did good - though interesting that they’ve left off the top half of the map. I wonder if there are too many details there that TPTB don’t want out yet.

Liked the references to Black Rock and Polar Bears (Ursus Martimus). But where’s the love for tattooed sharks?

Here’s a Wiki link to Cerberus - lots of interesting info.

ronincyberpunk, I think you’re on to something with your theory on what Cerberus is. More thoughts:

If Cerberus is the smoke-monster, then what is the TCM? I suspect they are separate but related forces. The big question is whether the TCM is actually a gigantic invisible beast, or some sort of elaborate illusion of hugeness. Could it possibly be an enormous 3-headed dog?

Now that would be something!

Somebody asked if there was likely to be a way to get to the raised blast door; I noticed that the drawing and writing extend past the top of the doorway, so I’m assuming they can get to it when it’s up in the ceiling. They may have gone past it before and never used blacklight on it.

At this point, I’m just assuming that any jets we see are Oceanic, any numbers are Numbers, any waitress is Kate’s Mom…

Can anybody tell how the map on the door matches up with the map Henry drew to the balloon?

Good catch. It’s called “bad writing.” Or, he had the crowbar ready to go, and knew they had to open the blast doors anyway. It’s not like these people are big planner types, after all.

I was also skeptical about Helen’s innocence, and kept expecting her to be the Sawyer in this little con. Except, of course, Locke has no money to steal, that we know of.

You can believe it or not, but this is exactly the scene as I was thinking it was going to be before Helen showed up. So I approve of what you’ve written.

I don’t know what you mean by talking about Locke “falling for” his father’s tricks again, though. He didn’t seem to have fallen for anything in this episode–it appears as though what his dad said was on the up-and-up.

My wife remains conivnced Locke went with the intention to do something bad. She actually thinks maybe Locke was going to kill his dad, though I don’t know about that. I would like to know why he came if “it wasn’t for the money” as he said. I’d like to know how the sentence fragment “I was just about to f–” (said to Helen during the angry conversation afterwards) would have been completed if he had completed it. Why didn’t he complete it, after all? Because to complete it would have been to reveal he was going to do something drastic?

Anyway, someone else mentioned the idea that Helen is a coconspirator with Daddy Locke. I think that’s a great idea. I hope its true. Poor Locke! Oh my god what a pitiful fellow! (If its true.)

I just grabbed the first one. The second one was Oceanic, too.

I was actually more interested in the Flightline Motel. Have we seen it before? It looks really familiar, but I can’t place it.

My Name is Earl’s hotel?

It looks like the one they used in the first season of Veronica Mars.

re: Locke falling for his father’s act again. If it was me holding that bag, I would have taken out my cut before I went to the motel, expecting a double-cross.

Here’s another shot of the door diagram.

I’m afraid that productivity in US offices is going to plummet today as millions of workers stare at these diagrams and try to figure things out.

I have to admit that the whole prying open of the door was crazy since Locke knows you can crawl thru the overhead ducts to get out. WTF???

What were the flashing lights that Jack and Kate saw at the end? I assume they were somehow associated with the parachute drop, but by that time I’d had too much wine to follow the story well. I gotta re-watch this episode later today.

Entertainment Weekly’s map (received from the producers)

Lots of comments there. Skip it if you want to try to decode it all yourself.

I’m pretty sure that was a beacon for the Dharma Hatchies to locate the food more easily.

I just posted this over in the questions thread, but I’ll restate it here–if the Real Henry Gale was alone, who dug him that fancy-schmancy grave? I imagine the Others would have just let him rot, or maybe buried what was left of him rather shallowly and haphazardly so Fake Henry could be inserted.

His wife, she is the one who survived and was captured by the Others and told them the story of the balloon.

On that newer map silenus posted–at around 11 o’clock it says “Estimated travel time (presumably to the Staff hatch) incompatible with 108. Do not attempt to survey”. That’s a pretty good indicator that Kelvin was indeed the cartographer.

Good point. Must think things through before posting.

How do you “de-territorial”-ize a polar bear? D.I.H.G. = Dharma Initiative Hanso Group? This is going to keep me busy for days! John Mace is right…nobody who watches this show is getting a lick of work done today.

Can anyone confirm that this picture is definitely from Entertainment Weekly, was provided by the producers and can be considered canon? (I realize that’s actually three separate questions.) If it is, there’s a lot of new information there, such as the notation that a a particular location is the

known final resting place of Magnus Hanso/Black Rock.

I don’t know how to do a screen-cap, but I’m almost certain we saw “the car” in this episode. It was parked in a driveway behind Anthony Cooper’s silver car outside of Locke’s house.

What do I win?

Around 4:00–mention of “Intranet”. At some point, the hatches were in communication with each other.

I have done nothing today.

That magazine speculates that “Magnus Hanso” refers to John Fowles’ The Magus. That would dovetail with the plot and all, but “Magnus” simply isn’t “magus.”

It seems to me more likely to refer to Albertus Magnus: alchemist, scientist, philosopher, magician, Latin scholar, and general mythic hero figure.
