Elizabeth Mitchell is gorgeous. Really. I find her absolutely striking. But for the love of God, she looks like she’s been forcibly Botoxed every time she tries to form a facial expression…
I think the producers actually ruled out purgatory in one of their podcasts, but didn’t explicitly say anything about hell or heaven. Talk about anvilicious, though, this episode.
The little woobie shipper heart of mine melted to see how tenderly Desmond is taking care of Naomi–his link to Penelope–and how utterly thrilled he looked while Naomi was talking…
And Hurley’s line. Sawyer: “I was going to take a leak. You?” Hurley: “Yeah, uh… us too.” Sawyer: looking between him and Jin :dubious: “Right, then…”
It’s becoming increasingly obvious that the writers of Lost are aware of all the theories and debates floating around online and they’re deciding to mess with us a little.
And another thing – if the writers wanted to go dark in this episode and have Sawyer strangle someone who can’t defend himself – why didn’t they have Locke cut off Cooper’s head? Why make him carry the body all over the jungle? Makes him look stupid.
I think the “We’re in Hell.” comment was a wink at us forumers.
As far as how Cooper got there, are we to believe he was kidnapped and taken to the island? To get to Locke? Assuming Ben orchestrated that, to what end? To humiliate Locke? That seems kind of flimsy. Any other guesses? So, the “Big Box” is figurative? I don’t get it…
I liked the episode, but after all of that, not sure if we answered any questions, it all seemed kind of self-contained. In other words, we found out that Locke was unable to kill the man who conned him, but Sawyer was. Not too much on the side story of the helicopter survivor. That’s about it. Am I missing something?
What else could it be? Maybe Henry told Cooper that if he told Locke that cockamamie story about a car accident, he’d let him go, or give him some money. Or a kidney.
That killing was a bit too cold-blooded for me, for this show. I’m hoping it was faked somehow, but it looked pretty real.
Maybe Ben wants to make Locke look stupid, or at least wants to make things difficult for him. Ben seemed to enjoy humiliating Locke in front of the crowd when Locke was unable to kill his father. As Ben and the group left Locke, Ben said this:
“We’ll leave a trail so you can follow. Oh, and John – unless you’re carrying your father’s body on your back, don’t bother.”
He could just as well have asked for the head. Asking for the entire body seems to be the deliberate imposition of a burden. As penance for Locke’s having failed initially? Or because Ben is a snarky, mean-spirited little weasel? Or because the writers didn’t want to get too gruesome so soon after the Paolo & Nikki shocker? Dunno. But I am going to keep watching in the hope that the season ender will be a doozy.
Something felt wrong with that whole scene. I don’t think Ben or any of the Others expected Locke to kill Cooper. It was like an initiation, where everyone but the initiate was in on the set-up. But why set it up? It’s not like The Others are looking for a bloodthirsty new leader.
I missed the Nikki and Paolo episode, so this is the darkest one I’ve seen so far.
That wasn’t cold blooded at all. Cold blooded implies impassionate, detached, an intellectual decision to commit murder.
Here Sawyer is, absolutely full of emotion because he met the man who ruined his life, and all this man does is practically dare Sawyer to kill him by antagonizing him as much as possible. That’s a hot-blooded killing if there ever was one.
Is it in character for him to be such an ass when his life (his… afterlife?) was in danger? The guy was practically egging on everyone there to kill him. It seems like if he was such a successful con artist, he’d be good at acting, assessing situations… and wouldn’t basically dare people to kill him.
Which means either the character is such a ridiculously over the top irredeemable dick that he can’t even act nice when people are going to kill him, or that for some reason the character intended to bait someone into killing him - if he was a manifestation of the island, or whatever, maybe it was part of the plan.
I concur. I am not certain, but it did seem to me that the guy wasn’t acting like the Cooper we know.
And I’m quite certain I’m wrong about the following, but I couldn’t shake it: I had the distinct impression that Cooper had acquired Ben’s accent, somehow.
