Lost 4.05: "The Constant"

The phone was already connected to Penny’s land line. It was the sattelite phones that they were told could only communicate with each other.

I’m pretty sure they don’t intentionally. I think I read on Lostipedia somewhere that the island people were intentionally sequestered until the results of their experiments were final.

Not following, unless you mean did it come off a tree or something.

Oh, right. Sorry, I thought he was talking about the sat phone.

No, I meant when he set it up for Desmond to talk to Penny. I mean, seriously, wouldn’t he be thinking to get a message of his own out? Or, why fix it for Desmond anyway? Why not use it himself to call someone he can trust in the US or wherever? It’s pretty clear that the freighter people are not to be trusted.

Well, if you want to be nitpicky, why the hell is Sayid calling it quits once the lantern batteries power was dead. Are they convinced that there are no other power sources on this giant freighter?

But hey, that’s Lost.

But still, let’s assume that he figures they are limited to what they can find in the communications room for whatever reason. Maybe he thinks they only have a little time before they’re discovered or they might get caught if they rumage around the rest of the boat. So, you’re Sayid and you’re thinking: Should I let this lunatic call his girlfriend, or do I call someone to let them know there are survivors of Oceanic 815 and that they’re somewhere on an Island with people who just arrived on a freighter and whose intent is unknown? Ah, let cookoo brain call his girlfriend!

But yeah, this is Lost

They’re saying that everything comes from nowhere, in a sense. We accept that a universe like ours had things poof into existence by God or the big bang. We can also accept that in a universe where your time loop is possible, things are able to poof into existence that way as well.

Sayid let Desmond call Penny because he believes in true love and dramatic story structure!

Who would he call? Who does he know who would A. believe him and B. be able to set up a rescue expedition? Penny is at least as good a choice as any - she’s rich, and she has access to a whatever resources you need to answer an underwater videophone call. Why not her?

Well, that and not having Des’s brains shoot out his nose.

Well, for one thing, Desmond is acting like a lunatic, and who knows what number he’s come up with. But, even if you accept that calling Penny is a good idea, then Sayid should get his 2 cents in along with Desmond. Remember, Desmond doesn’t know anything about Oceanic 815 in his current state (before finding his constant). Sayid shouldn’t expect him to tell her anything about them, and he didn’t.
