Michael originally intended (and attempted) to blow up the entire ship, which obviously would’ve killed him as well.
I’m on record as saying that we there are people and/or organization that either haven’t been introduced or even slightly fleshed out yet. Each season the writers expand the “Lost” universe, and we have 2 more seasons to go. As for the records Mr. Friendly showed Michael… they could be complete fakes. I wouldn’t even be surprised, as I said above, if Ben and Widmore were more closely connected than we know. They may even have been collaborators at some point.
Heck, they could *still * be collaborators.
Agreed. It seemed like that reference was particularly trying to pound us over the head with how literarily savvy the writers are. It might have been cooler if they just showed a random part of the episode (forcing the sick Lost fiends to try to dig up a transcription of the episode, to discover the SH5 reference) or if they had at least dimmed the noise. The volume of the TV Michael was watching seemed particularly loud.
Poo-tee-weet
But…he can’t die, can he? I was pretty convinced by the whole gun-to-the-head scene. And if he can’t die, does this mean Sayid and Desmond can’t die because the “island won’t let them”?
Or will the island “let” them die once he has carried out a mission on behalf of the island?
And if no one from the island can die (presumably they can die while ON the island)…is our friend in the coffin really a person from the island?
Or what if our friend in the coffin IS Ben or Jacob and he told Jack and Kate “if I die, it means the island is about to die, and everyone on it will die” and that’s why Jack is all “we gotta get back to the island!!” because now that Ben or Jacob is dead that means none of their friends are safe on the island anymore.
Hmm?
You can’t silence a rifle like that - at least not while it’s still “high powered” and firing supersonic ammunition. The sonic boom of the round creates its own sound and definitely isn’t silent.
There is some utility in silencing a supersonic round - it makes it harder to locate the source of the sound - but it definitely isn’t that effective in keeping things quiet.
FWIW I definitely got a dart impression.
However, I doubt the creator’s of lost would get this sort of thing right. So they very well could have a silent rifle, or for that matter, a silent pistol that produced rifle-like damage.
That’s kinda what I was getting at. I don’t think a dart or arrow would be depicted as going through a body with no obvious remnants.
Argh why did I do that? I hate random apostrophe syndrome.
Silenced subsonic round. If we want to believe this was an accurate depiction, that’ the only thing it could be. A high powered rifle would have made a supersonic crack. Also, that water bottle would have exploded into a spray of mist from the hydrostatic shock. Have you ever shot a plastic water jug with a high powered bullet? It explodes real good.
So it would have to be a silenced subsonic round - like the rounds they were firing from those submachine guns on the boat - probably 9mm.
I was sure it wasn’t darts. When the bullets were hitting trees, they were sending up clouds of dust and bark. Darts don’t do that. It was meant to be silenced guns and any inaccuracies i’ll chalk up to typically hollywood screw ups when dealing with guns.
I think they were killed by the mercenaries on the ship. Have we seen all of them on the freighter since Sayid and Desmond got there? I’m thinking they helicopter took the killing party to the island before it found the losties, and they’re hunting down everyone and killing them on sight.
I think Danielle and Karl are therefore stone cold bleedin’ demised.
What if heblew up the boat and the island still wouldn’t let him die?
**I think Danielle and Karl are therefore stone cold bleedin’ demised.
**
Yeah, and so was Locke when he was shot by Ben.
Any speculation on what the helicopter is up to? They took off, but I’m not sure who was on it besides the pilot.
I suspect the helicopter took the mercenaries we saw practicing on deck to the Island. I also suspect said mercenaries were who shot Karl and Danielle.
Which lends credence to Ben’s statement that the freighter folks plan to kill everyone on the Island.
With regards to Danielle and Karl…
The actor who played Carl was interviewed by Kristen Dos Santos, and said his death was a result of him asking the producers to let him off the show to be in a theater production. That confirms for me that he’s dead. But since it was about him, I don’t think Danielle is dead. I think we’ll see her struggle to save Alex. Carl said the producers have said they’ll likely feature him in an important flashback similar to the way Mr. Friendly was featured this week some time in the future.
OK, I just rewatched the episode. The first projectile (the one that went through the water bottle Karl was holding) seemed kind of like a dart, but the rest did seem like bullets.
Also, it was odd that Frank said Widmore believed him about there being survivors of 815 since he, Frank, didn’t realize that until just a few days before-- ie, when he saw the news flash about it. The timeline of the news story was just a few days before the freighter left, when Michale went to Tom’s hotel room. So, the freighter was already set to go before Frank knew about the faked wreckage. He almost made it sound like he was the one who got Widmore to realize the news story was not true, but the timeline wouldn’t support that hypothesis.
The main problem with Lost is that it so obviously follows Writer Logic, instead of logic. This means that everything is forced to serve a certain vision (of plot, theme, character, etc.- variable by episode and often by scene), even when this means sacrificing other aspects. If this plot twist would be cool, then having characters act in totally unbelievable ways is fine. If this character must be developed in such-and-such a fashion, then the plot can be stretched to absurd limits to make it happen. I mean, The Others’ actions and personality have generally been extremely malleable, going from psychotic and capricious (blowing up Michael’s boat, wtf?) to reasonable to needlessly mysterious back to reasonable, etc. etc. So many characters are not actually characters, they’re plot devices.
There could very well be a third outside-the-island party, or Ben IS Charles Widmore (or his dad), or Michael may have magic powers or is The One, and is the only one who can talk to Jacob, who is actually a 6-toed alien that served as God to ancient humans. It’s all totally possible, because there is no consistent reality, as the writers have shown us that anything in the show can be bent out of recognition to make anything else happen.
The aliens have four toes.
No, different aliens than the aliens that built the statue.
Crap, I just blew the plot twist in an episode from season 5.
Yeah, Lost is a supremely stupid show…yet I still watch it every damn week.
Does anyone get flashbacks of the hokey Philadelphia Experiment nonsense every time they show the going ons on the boat?
yeah the show’s stupid…but it’s so well done!
