Just in time for Christmas, a little blasphemy that I thought might tickle some of our resident LOTR freaks.
Behold! LOTR Nativity! Legolas is Mary (to quoth the creator of this pic: “is not a virgin but is male, which is just as much of a miracle”) and is holding Baby Jesus, here played by Frodo. Aragorn is Joseph, of course. The Wise Men (well, two wise men and a dwarf) bring offerings of the One Ring and mithril. Three orcs and a cave troll look on as the sheperds. She’s not visible in the photo, but the creator assures me that a 12-inch angel Galadriel is presiding over the tender scene.
The execution is a bit muddle. If the point is analogy, Legolas as Mary and Orcs as shepherds make no sense. If blasphemy is intended, why not baby Gollum?
Tolkien would be appalled, of course, but my choices would be:
Aragorn - Joseph
Arwen - Mary
Frodo - Jesus
Angel - Galadriel
Magi - Gandalf, Saruman, Elrond
Shepherds - Theoden, Faramir
It might be nice to include the inkeeper on the perimeter. Is there a Butterbur doll, uh, action figure?
This kind of reminds me of when my stepmother set up a Cabbage Patch Kid Nativity, with a preemie as the infant. Except she was serious.
