Love Monkey (aka Ed 2?) Tuesday night!

If you’ve managed to not hear about Love Monkey, you haven’t been watching the same channels I have. I guess it’s all the football I’ve been watching lately, but I think I’ve seen no less than eleventy thousand ads for this sucker over the last couple months.

This one actually looks good though. I enjoyed Ed, and the reviews I’ve read make Love Monkey sound fairly similar, so I’ll give it a try.

I’ve also heard my beloved Aimee Mann is going to appear as herself. I can’t be the only doper excited about that. Paging Miller!

Anyone else checking it out?

I put it on my Tivo Season Pass list. Looks interesting. We’ll see whether I watch episode 3 or not…

Yeah, I’m planning to check it out – thanks for reminding me.

After one episode, my official rating is “meh”. I like Tom Cavanaugh, like the musical premise, don’t like the “boys” and their guy talk scenes, not much for the female friend who knows him better than he knows himself, and wasn’t much for Wayne.

I’ll give it another couple of episodes before I officially make a decision.

Hm. As a nonfan of both Ed and Aimee Mann, I’m going to wait till I accidentally happen upon it.

Word. Pretty much exactly what I was thinking. Only thing I really hated was the athlete guy (way miscast). The 4-man man talk wasn’t as funny as they seemed to think it was. But I love Tom C and the music premise is cool so I’ll give it at least until episode 3.

I was in full-tilt “meh” after the first half-hour, and actually was planning to turn off the TV and go to bed, but didn’t – and ended up getting into it by the end of the hour. I think it has possibiliites.

CRAP! I wasn’t home last night, and forgot to have hubby TiVo it. Can someone spoil it for me, in depth?

I missed it too. Damn. I love Tom Cavanaugh and I’m definitely going to catch the Aimee Mann episode.

So, wasn’t really paying that much attention to it last night, and missed this. It’s not a huge thing, but I’ll spoiler it just in case.

Is athlete boy…

…gay? He took that guy flowers there at the end, and gave him a hug. Did they mention that earlier? I must have missed it.

It’s all right, but nothing outstanding. I thought it was trying to take a bunch of elements that have made other shows successful and combine all of them into one. You’ve got the inner monologue from Scrubs, the ensemble cast from Friends, the lovable loser from Earl, the sexual vibe from Sex and the City (only reversed a bit), and a little bit from the movie Jerry McGuire just for good measure. It’s like you can see the suits thinking - “It’s a guaranteed hit! All these elements; we can’t miss.” Like the Guiness guys, “Brilliant!”

It was enjoyable enough to have on in the background while I was doing other things, but I doubt I’ll go out of my way to watch it.

Snickers – my impression was that that was the “reveal” on that tidbit on that guy.

And for Ed’s (wait, what’s the character’s name?) platonic gal pal, at the end –Didn’t she say she was off to meet some guy? and then she went home alone? Or did I miss something?

My significant other worked a bit on the set of this show, so out of curiosity I had it on while I was finishing the Times crossword, which was probably a bad stretegy as I have never seen a TV show where so many people seemed to be mumbling jokes under their breath. It’s hard to judge a show on just one episode, especially one that’s trying to introduce so many characters and so many different milieu so quickly. I could have done without the “It’s all about the music” A&R guy speech (please) and the pretty forced “guy talk.” I would have concentrated on just the female friend and the girlfriend up front. All the other charcaters seemed to have very little to say or do. The “married guy” character is beyond pathetic. They should just show his wife’s vagina actually smacking him with a cat-o-nine-tails and get it over with.

I waver between excitment and disappointment that Shopsin’s General Store is in the opening credits. Trying too hard, maybe. Part of me hopes this show fails so I can still eat at Shopsin’s and wear my Brooklyn Dodgers hat without feeling too much like a Tom Cavanaugh wannabe. (We also seem to own the same guitar. Oh my.) On the other hand, if I’m such a cliche already, I should just cut my losses and start dressing like Kramer from Seinfeld.

I never watched Ed. Why was it cancelled?

It lasted several seasons. The starting premise was that the guy returned to the town where he grew up and started courting the unattainable goddess from high school. Natch, around season three or four he attained her, at which point there was nowhere for the show to go.

OK. So in this show he’s trying to obtain Nirvana?

(Now I want someone to start an “Ask the Unobtainable Goddess from High School” thread. I don’t think my high school had one, but maybe I wasn’t paying attention. I’m pretty sure we had a football team.)

As an aside, I would be moderately amused if this show actually came around to a realistic-ish portrayal of the whole Modern Urban Thirtysomething Internet-Era Dating thing – and I think it’s possible that over the last few years I went out on some dates that may have been part of this show’s development process (it would explain why this one women tagged my ear, for one thing) – I won’t get my hopes up. Mainly because I’m not sure of the entertainment value of watching people suffer.

I just found myself really missing Mike Burton during the whole episode. And having commercials where that actor is in another show didn’t help either! He was my favorite Ed character.

I was thinking the same thing.

Ed, while the main plot was about that soap-operaish romantic thing, had a great ensemble of characters that had good chemistry, which made it really good. This cast not so much.

I thought it was cute. But I’m a dumb sucker for both Tom Cavanaugh AND Jason Priestly, and I’m a little bit queer for Judy Greer. Still, I liked it, and I’m keeping my Season Pass.

I liked it; I’ll keep watching.

Saw it again last night for the first time since the premiere – just plain forgot about it, how many eps have I missed?

I’m liking this show. The chemistry on the main cast seems to be coming together. My one beef last night was young guys turning their caps around in response to Ed’s – um, Tom’s? what’s the character’s name, again? – hip wearing of his baseball cap – that was totally

Anyone else still watching? Whatcha think?

twick - I saw it and agree with you. And while I did find the cap thing kinda cheesy on its face, I really did like the concept of a lead character in a show feeling cool and sharing that. I always struggled with Frasier and the fact that the whole point to the show was to take this pompous guy down a notch. I felt like last night’s show captured the “man, sometimes it all just works” concept to a place I could relate to - and I like the fact that he found it again at the end…

I never watched Ed - I found it more Northern Exposure quirky than anything - but I enjoyed this…
