I don’t think this one got a thread when it first came out, did it? Caught this odd little flick last night. About a technical writer who orders himself one of those high tech $10,000 sex dolls (“Nikki”), falls in love with it, then thinks it becomes a jealous stalker when he starts dating the real woman co-worker he used as the model for the doll. Creepy movie all around. Desmond Harrington was really good as Kenneth, the technical writer who wasn’t put together all that well to begin with who rapidly comes even more unglued. Melissa Sagemiller (who was good but largely superfluous in the Showtime mini-series “Sleeper Cell”) did a good job as Lisa, the co-worker and the unwitting model for the doll.
I wasn’t really sold on the ending though. Kenneth kidnaps Lisa with the intention of turning her into a replacement Nikki. He buys embalming equipment, inserts the device to drain her blood and almost starts pumping in embalming fluid when she manages to get free. She understandable flips out and is about to kill him when the cops bust in and shoot her dead. He gets away with it because the cops take it at face value that she was going to kill and embalm him. First, assuming there was even a cursory examination of the body the medical examiner would have seen the wound on Lisa’s thigh from where Kenneth inserted the drainage device. Second, how hard could it possibly have been to check mortuary supply stores to determine that it was Kenneth and not Lisa who bought the embalming equipment?
A question about Kenneth’s face. At about the time he gets fired, he develops a nasty red mark on the side of his face. Did something happen that caused the mark that I missed, or was that perhaps supposed to be some sort of symbolism. His face started showing disfigurement like the porn clerk’s and the porn customer’s, and IIRC the delivery guy had some sort of purplish skin discoloration too.
