This may be the best webcomic going. It’s certainly better than any I’ve had recommended. It beats Order of the Stick on quality, IMO, and easily beats Everyday Decay and The Zombie Hunters for creepiness.
How on earth can you compare this to Order of the Stick? It’s like saying “Aliens” is better in quality than “Tootsie.” They’re two complete different genres, two different artistic styles, two different writing styles… LiM is basically a graphic novel (the pages are continued from one another and so far the strips don’t seem to stand on their own; they’ll surely read better in a bound edition). OotS is usually a gag-a-day strip, with plenty of continuity but each strip is self-contained. This isn’t comparing apples and oranges, it’s comparing apples and hammers. Both useful items but you can hardly judge one against the other!
This may simply be more to your taste, especially if you’re into horror. As someone who isn’t, but who still loves a good story, I’ll say: the artwork is lovely and evocative, and the writing is good. But so far – I’m up to “Special Collections,” 11/28/09 – the characters aren’t grabbing me much. It’s all Plotty McExposition. Which I’m sure is appropriate to the pulpy style, of course, but I’m someone who connects more to characterization than plot. (Funnily enough, unpretentious, humble little OotS had already made me invested in its characters by the 15th strip.) I’ll continue reading because I like the artist’s style very much.
Thanks for the rec!
This is really cool. Question, does it actually stick to its schedule? That’s my biggest gripe with OOTS, that it doesn’t.
Edit: I agree withchoie that it can’t really be compared to OOTS. Totally different.
I think the thing with OOTS, at least right now, is that they’re between story arcs.
As for Lovecraft is Missing, I absolutely love this comic. I was first directed to it from the Something Positive website. Thanks for reminding me that today is an update day.
And Silophant, the author has been VERY good about updating every Friday.
I’m getting constant errors trying to read it - anyone else get this problem?
Yes, Woeg, I got a lot of missing images, though mostly not strip images themselves – just chapter headers and things like that. Considering the archives aren’t that old (less than a year) this seems kinda odd. Maybe he changed servers since then.
The only problem I have with LiM is that I’m up to today and I want MORE!
I’ve been a Lovecraft fan for years, and this keeps the flavour amazingly well, both artwork and story. I can only hope he can keep it up.
I’ll have to go look at the others.
LiM really is good with the updates and the author keeps his promises. If he says he’ll take a break until day x, month y, he shows up with a new comic as scheduled. None of your Chainmail Bikini type hijinx.
I guess the OotS comparison is off, but I’ve been a fan of the Stick for a long while now, and LiM has caught up and is currently beating it as my favorite webcomic. Make that favorite current comic, but that’s because I’m not reading any comicbooks and newspaper comics haven’t caught my attention in a long time. The local is still running “Calvin and Hobbes”. And sheesh, it’s the best thing on the funny page by a mile.
The comic is awesome. I love it how the writer manages to tie up all of Lovecraft’s stories into one coherent plot. Thank you for shewing it to me.
