Love's critical misfires

On my campus chalking is very common. Sometimes it’s advertisements, sometimes it’s event notification, sometimes it’s political statement or poetry… you know, the usual university stuff.

Today there’s a ton of messages from a guy who wants to get back with his girl. Stuff like “Our hands fit so well together,” “I love you so much,” “please give me another chance.”

While I realize the effect he’s going for is “John Cusack holding up the boombox in ‘Say Anything’”, it’s coming off a lot more like “Oh dear god restraining order.”

Maybe I’m just a cynic…

When I was a young sprat, I thought the big gestures (like Mr. Cusack) were all romantic and stuff. Now, not so much. I see that kind of thing in movies, and I get the same feeling - hello restraining order.

Maybe you should chalk something to that effect for the poor, misguided dear.

It’s definitely creepifying. I would say:

One cute, personally significant chalked message, in a public place the girl passes by (Possibly also meaningful to the relationship, like the spot they met) = John Cusack holding up the boombox in “Say Anything”.

Messages all over campus, with no discernable personal import other than being varyingly needy and desperate, or which sound like they came out of a Chicken Soup book (our hands fit well?! Blech!) = John Cusack hiding boomboxes all over Diane’s house, and notifying Dick Clark.
