Lurkers of the World Unite

I just realized that I have been on this board since march 99 and have less that 125 posts. I hereby declare myself the senior lurker, anyone with an older account and 3.37 posts per month or fewer declare yourself senior. All other dedicated lurkers declare yourselves here.

Not a senior lurker or even a serious lurker. More like a mid road lurker to mid road poster. My post ratio is just under 1.2 a day. Definately not handy level, but considerably more that 4 a month.

I am also a professional lurker. I am trying real hard to make it to a year with under 100 posts so I can’t possibly post to this thread.

Oh Dammit!

Another Lurker here,
Does anyone else feel like they KNOW some of the regular posters through reading their posts everyday? And then after thinking that, do you feel like a jackass when you realize that none of those people have any idea that you even exist? That freaks me out sometimes.

pstarr, I know what you mean, I cried when wally died, and I had never communicated with the man at all…in retrospect definetly weird.

Semi Pro Lurker checking in!

Wow!!! I just realilzed I must be the Queen Lurker as I have been on the board for 11 months with only 24, damn 25 posts. That’s 2.27 a month…

I win
I win
Nah nah

Well, let’s see…

I think that puts me somewhere around 0.3 posts per month.

I’m the quiet type.

Hmm… 12 posts since May of '99= .5/month. I’m surprised it’s that many. Actually, the only reason I didn’t register earlier is that after the AOL board got shut down, I spent some time lurking on m.f.s-d. I voted for that group creation too, you can look it up. I guess that makes me a lurker, but a committed one.

Another lurker here. And Pstarr, I know what you mean, it can be very weird.

And smegmumV WallyM7 was one of the reasons I lurked here for so long. That and the sense of community. So I finally registered last year and started posting.

One of these days i’ll probably have a flurry of posts, and everyone will be like, “Who the HELL is this Grimace dude?”

I’ve been an unregistered lurker for about a year or so.
Oddly enough I have been to 3 NY Dopefests prior to being registered. I became a member in Feb 2001.This is post #3.

I first posted in '98 or early '99 under a different name. I changed names with moderator permission in May last year. I went back and counted and I have about 37 posts under both names.

I read the boards regularly. Oh, the stories I could tell.

Another lurker piping in. I was lurking back before we lost wally too (sniff, sniff). I only registered recently. I have all of 20 some odd posts.

Pstarr, I can definatly relate.

Yup, do an awful lot of lurking.

Actually, when I don’t think I have anything of value to add to a thread, I keep my mouth shut.

Another master lurker checking in. Let’s see…I guess I’m about 4.1 posts a month. Been here religiously everyday since practically the beginning.

I, too, enjoy the strong sense of community here, and though I rarely get the urge to post I feel at least some kinship with the regulars. Of course, no one gives my few posts a second glance, but if only they knew how much of their life they’ve revealed to lurking strangers like myself. Like Pstarr, I feel like I know these people like a confidant, and can recall so many details of their lives that border on the disturbing.

A tangential question: Why do YOU lurk? For me, I find that it’s far easier just to wait for someone else to post something I may have said, rather than going through the effort to craft a reply myself.

Lurker checking in. Unregistered but voraciously reading the boards since August or so, registered but not posting since um, whatever the thing net to my name says. I don’t see it often enough to remember.

Remember regular posters, we stay silent, but we see all… BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

The lurkers creed.

I lurk for a variety of reasons: (Though, considereing the stats of some of you, I am a regular chatter box.)

  1. The debates can be marvelous! The intellect of many of the posters on this board are incredible. Just reading some of the threads has inspired me to rethink and critically examine many of beliefs and preconceived notions. Some were made stronger while others I was able to discard.

  2. Acceptance. I like a place where almost no question is unacceptable. Of course, a search of the archives is always advised before starting a thread. Otherwise the result can be a little harsh.

  3. I know who Opal is.

  4. Some of the flames in the pit are terrific. Some of the best never used a single curse word. I am in awe of the ability of some people to tell a person to go to hell in such a manner that they look forward to the trip.

Those are the reasons I read. The reasons I rarely post:

  1. Nothing to say.

  2. Not up to the challenge to take on the craftier word-smiths.

  3. Views/beliefs not solid enough to stand up to the scruitiny of a debate. By the time they are, the thread is gone.

  4. No time. A post can be read in seconds. A good post takes serious time to compose. Anything less is not worth everyones’ time, I my opinion.

Regards

I lurk too. I enjoy the stimulation my mind gets from lurking in this forum, bit tend to just talk back to my computer when I agree/disagree with a post. it takes real conviction or an expert point of view for me to pipe up and actually post. There are few things I’m an expert on, and it takes a lot to get me really riled-up.
