Lynnhaven Inlet Deaths

Ello all…I was wondering if anyone happens to have the picture/info on the Grim Reaper Sign that used to be in the water at the Lynnhaven Inlet in Va Beach, Virginia…it had the names of the people that died trying to swim across and the day/year ect that they died…(the people usually died cause they thought they could swim across the inlet but didn’t know about the undertowe ect) Thanks All!

You’ve definitely piqued my interest, as I’ve been in/out of the inlet a few times and have never seen nor heard about this. I’m going to check around.

My b/f said he saw it several years ago when he was youger.

Not that this will be very helpful, but I took a picture of the sign in 1992. A friend had just moved into a house a few blocks from there. Nothing more recent to report.

Do you still happen to have a copy of the photo?

I remember the sign, I used to live there in the Chesapeake House [not the condo right at the ‘corner’ but the one next to it]

FWIW, it was put up to list the dates of the people who died there when the tides turned and they got caught in the undertow. Having fished on the little beach there [kick ass flounder, yumm] I saw it a number of times. sigh I miss the Duck in, Worrell Brothers, the Jewish Mother and the Anchor Inn=( Is Cap’n Georges still all you can eat seafood?

oh so does anyone have a pic of the sign?

Wow! All the times I’ve been there and never noticed it. And it’s kind of hard to miss. I just got confirmation that as of last year it was still there. As a matter of fact, a bud of mine says he’ll see if he can get over there and get a pic today or tomorrow. And yes, it has the grim reaper on it, along with dangerous current warnings and the number deaths this/past year.

Cap’n Georges still does the buffet, Duck-In owners just sold the property, so coming soon will be more condos. There’s a new marina the city built on the western side Lesner Bridge. Worrell Bro’s and Jew Mom’s are still kicking.

The Jewish Mother kicks ass.

My hangout was always Bubba’s Beach Club. It was a locals’ favorite and a Steeler bar.

They moved from Laskin over to 17th a couple of years ago, but are still doing fine.

Oh cool thanks…cause my bf and I where down there the other night and didn’t see it. :stuck_out_tongue:

zerovixen, I’m disappointed to report that the sign has been removed. I just got a picture of the new sign, but apparently it’s a generic warning sign. It seems the old sign was taken down by the city when the new marina was built last year, I guess they didn’t want to scare off the tourists. Email me if you want a pic of the new sign.

Yes and no. It’s in a box in the basement of my parents’ house. I can look at Christmas if you’re still interested then.
