M*A*S*H, a few Q's.

Captain Tuttle…wasn’t Hawkeye taking supplies (“borrowed” from the 4077th) to the orphanage, and the nun/nurse in charge wanted to know who helped get them, so the kids could either write thank-you notes or pray for him? And that was when he invented Captain Tuttle (who had been his imaginary childhood friend)?
He wasn’t really a scapegoat; Hawkeye just didn’t want the credit for giving things to the orphans.
Hawkeye ended up having his pay directed to the orphanage…remember someone showed up with a ton of backpay? Hawkeye signed for it in a scrub mask.
When Tuttle “died”, his death benefits were directed to the orphanage.

Yes, that’s correct. And they were joined by someone we’d heard a lot about, but never seen from back in the states…

Technically, he still would’ve been a scapegoat in that “he” bore the blame/responsibility for the missing supplies. And yes, as I recall, it was that his death benefits went to the orphanage. I was recalling the fact that the army had somehow acknowledged the fictious Tuttle and his death in some way–it was death benefits. Perhaps Frank and/or Hotlips did say he deserved a medal–it just seems familiar to me, but I can’t recall specifically at the moment.

Good job on the details!!

I would guess it would (obviously) have to be Mrs. Potter, right? Was Father Mulcahy’s sister the sister ever on it?
And didn’t Radar show up a couple times?

dougie_monty:

I don’t know how he paid it back, but the city was Mill Valley, California.

It was Mildred Potter. I don’t recall every seeing his sister the sister and think Radar might have shown up. It had a very short lived run. I remember that Father Mulcahy’s hearing continued to get worse and that he had developed an alcohol problem, which I believe Col. Potter counseled him on. A bit somber for a “situational comedy.”

Scarlett67 got the answers to Hot Lips federal crime and Captain Tuttle’s identity. Ankh_Too got the answers correct regarding Ho-Jon’s tuition(a toughie) and Frank’s middle name. Peta Tzunami correctly answered about Frank breaking the still in the pilot episode(Spearchurcker was upset also).

Okay, let’s compress the list down and see what questions remain unanswered. I’m including dougie_monty’s questions since they seemed good and some haven’t been answered yet.

  1. Who convinced Father Mulcahy to become a chaplain?

  2. How many episodes is Sidney Freedman in? This one can be a group session, everybody try to name the episodes he’s in and count them.

  3. What are the names of Radar’s Guinea pigs?

  4. What actor played Col. Alvin (“Howitzer Al”) Houlihan, Margaret’s father?

  5. What trick did Hawkeye and the others play on Frank in the episode where Hawkeye was blinded in a stove explosion?

  6. What actor played Hawkeye’s Navy friend in “38 Across,” (where Hawkeye wanted a crossword-puzzle word)? We all ready got the answer to what the word was.

And two more new ones…

  1. Name the two actors who played Father Mulcahy during the series.

  2. What are Honneycut’s parents names?

Keep up the good work! :stuck_out_tongue:

7. Name the two actors who played Father Mulcahy during the series.

William Christopher
Rene Auberjonois?? (He was the one in the movie anyway)

**8. What are Honneycut’s parents names? **
Bea and Jay

  1. Could it be his sister, Sister Angelica?

  2. William Christopher and George Morgan (pilot only).

Zev Steinhardt

I’ve got some!

Which character’s left hand was never shown the whole time he was in the series?

Where was Nurse Kellye from?

At the end of the “Hawkeye is blind” episode, one of the nurses playfully slapped Hawkeye with a paperback book. What was the title of that book?

What other MAS*H unit was most often mentioned on the show?

Radar’s. Gary Burghoff had a disfigured hand, right?

Hawaii

The 8063rd

Isn’t it something that wasn’t even published in the 50’s? I remember hearing that there is an episode with someone reading “Jaws” in one scene.

This is waaay back from the first set of questions.
2. Who did Harry Morgan play in his first MAS*H episode?
I think he was general Steele.

no one wants to play this one so I’ll try what I remember.

I know one was where they were all playing poker and Flagg comes around.

Another one was where the guy thinks he’s Jesus.

A third was when one of the wonded was having problems with going back and hated Freedman, basically cursed him out at the end.

He was also in the last episode helping Hawkeye.

I don’t know the names of any of them though. I think I remember reading somewhere there was either 6 or 8. it would be easy to look it up on the net though.

2. How many episodes is Sidney Freedman in? This one can be a group session, everybody try to name the episodes he’s in and count them.

There was also the one where Hawkeye was sneezing and Sidney helped him figure out why.

5. What trick did Hawkeye and the others play on Frank in the episode where Hawkeye was blinded in a stove explosion?

They faked a broadcast of a baseball game that Frank had bet on.

8. What are Honneycut’s parents names?

Not an answer, but a spelling fix: Hunnicutt.

This is fun!

Just thought I’d jump in real quick. No new questions, but I will say that zev_steinhardt was right about the two characters who played Mulcahy but wrong about who led Mulcahy to become a chaplain. Yes, BJ’s parents were Bea and Jay(I was despearate to come up with a question, so that one was easy).

By the way, here is a link for info. on The Moon is Blue, the movie Hawkeye and BJ were so desperate to get.

http://us.imdb.com/Title?0046094

I will be back with more questions and another compression of the still remaining ones later. By the way, try not to add too many questions to the list before some more get answered. The one’s that have been added have been quite good, though. Oh, Radar’s left hand is shown sometimes. He just tried to keep it off camera. Anyway, keep up the good work!.

Another Sidney Freedman ep–but it might be one of the others already mentioned–Where there is a “mystery practical joker” on the compound and it turns out to be BJ.

Another Radar question: What was his hometown?

Ottomwa (sp?), Iowa

Thanks to all the Dopers who answered the questions here. Some comments:

  1. What actor played Col. Alvin (“Howitzer Al”) Houlihan, Margaret’s father? (Andrew Duggan.)
  2. In the final episode, what song was the Chinese band playing when they followed Winchester back into the camp? (“Oh, Susanna”–not the Mozart composition; they were already POWs in the camp when they first played that.)
  3. For a down-payment on a home in what city did BJ borrow money from Charles? (Extra: how did BJ pay it back?) (He won it from Chawles in a poker game: He and the others found out how to tell when Chawles was bluffing.)
  4. What actor played Hawkeye’s Navy friend in “38 Across,” (where Hawkeye wanted a crossword-puzzle word)? (Extra hard: what was the word?) (The actor’s name was Oliver Clark.)
  5. In the final episode, what cause Father Mulcahy’s hearing loss? Actually, he was nearly deafened by an explosion from mortar fire.)

Comparing the movie to the TV series:

  1. Who played Spearchucker and Duke in the TV pilot? Why were they dropped? (Don’t ask me; I don’t know either)

  2. What was Margaret’s last name in the movie? NOT Houlihan.

Oh, and how did Soon-Li age so quickly from a 10-12 year old or so girl, whom the fellas talked out of prostitution at Rosie’s, into a fully grown bride for Klinger over the course of half of a 3-year war?

Insert obvious Woody Allen joke here.
