So m&m’s came out with a new line. So far we’ve tried the mocha and the raspberry almond. The yum!!!
Perfect frozen on these globally warmed summer days.

Huh. One of the ingredients in the new coating for the line is shellac. Ignorance fought…
Yeah, I read the ingredients list of the new line and was disappointed to see that euphemism for shellac, “confectioner’s glaze” listed. Not that it’s harmful or out of the ordinary (it’s pretty commonly used to add shine to candies like Junior Mints), but it sucks for candy fans like myself who happen to also be vegetarian.
For what it’s worth, shellac is the secretion of a particular type of bug, and doesn’t involve killing the bug to get it. If you eat honey (as implied by calling yourself a vegetarian rather than a vegan), the closest parallel food substance I can think of, you probably shouldn’t have a problem with shellac.
I haven’t tried them but I like the commercial – the one where the M&M notices that his M is smaller after he gets out of the freezer.
I tried looking at the link but my eyes were scarred by the horror that is candy corn. I’ll take your word for it that the new line exists.
While the insect theoretically needn’t be killed to harvest shellac, in practice it tends to happen quite a bit (unless there are boutique companies that do a time-intensive harvesting of larva-free lac). It, like honey and the potential to kill bees while harvesting, is one of those grey-area concerns for vegetarians. I err on the side of not consuming shellac, but wouldn’t argue with a vegetarian that chose to eat it (though, IME, vegetarians aren’t aware that it’s an animal product to begin with).
I bought a bag of the raspberry ones at Target last week. I wasn’t that impressed. They were good but I prefer regular M&Ms.
I think you might be thinking of a different product…There are raspberry M&Ms that are in a regular bag, but the M&Ms the OP is talking about are the individually wrapped premium M&Ms that come in a fancy box.
They aren’t individually wrapped, but do come in a sealed plastic bag that is in turn packaged in a fancy box.
Ah…I was looking at them thinking about getting some the other day, and they looked like they were individually wrapped.
No, I’m talking about the premiums. (I have had the “special edition” raspberry M&Ms - those I liked). The fancy box is just a fake, the actual M&Ms are in a plastic bag inside. I found this out when I attempted to dump the candy from the bag into the box and belatedly realized that the display hole in the front of the box was open and the M&Ms fell right back out. (Don’t make fun of me - I was in a movie theatre and it was dark.)
