I LOVE BEN!! One of my favorite King characters- definitely my favorite child.
They ALL float down here. When you’re down here with us, you’ll float too! —— IT
Although the last line of the Jaunt sticks with me more.
From The Stand:
“Show me a man or a woman alone and I’ll show you a saint. Give me two and they’ll fall in love. Give me three and they’ll invent the charming thing we call ‘society’. Give me four and they’ll build a pyramid. Give me five and they’ll make one an outcast. Give me six and they’ll reinvent prejudice. Give me seven and in seven years they’ll reinvent warfare. Man may have been made in the image of God, but human society was made in the image of His opposite number, and is always trying to get back home.”
“Hope is a good thing - maybe the best thing, and no good thing ever dies” Andy in Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption
“God is cruel. Sometimes he makes you live.” from Desperation
“There’s Mount Hope.”
The Stand
“Hey Trashy, why’d ya set fire to the church? Why dincha burn down the SCHOOL?” - The Stand
“Dannnneyeyeeeee!!!” - Jack Nicholson, slowly starting to congeal in the first filmed version of The Shining.
“The rats have business with you, I think.” - Graveyard Shift
I really like that one, too. Summed up a whole lot in two little sentences.
Then there was, “Come down and eat chicken with me, beautiful. It’s soooo dark.” from “The Stand.” Yikes.
Also from “The Stand”: “The rats are his.”
That’s my fav. one I was going to mention. “Sometimes he makes you live.”
When I read that- my jaw just dropped as my mind just processed that as a kid…
Still one of my first and fav. S.King books
The simple truth of things is that bad dreams are far better than bad wakings–Rose Madder
“Crazier than a shit-house rat!”
Dude, that’s pretty fuckin’ out there!
Quasi
From Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption:
And…
And from The Breathing Method:
So, so many.
From The Stand (I’m paraphrasing because I’m too lazy to go get my copy and look it up):
“We cannot go back and re-do our past, and maybe that’s a good thing. Otherwise, people would die of old age trying to perfect their 18th year”
From Trucks (in Night Shift, I think):
“I can see the planes circling overhead. How I wish I could believe there were people in them”
From Lunch At The Gotham Cafe in Everything’s Eventual:
“You can’t bring that dog in here!” (Just the perfect line, IMO, to convey just how crazy the maitre’d was).
Also from Everything’s Eventual, the title story:
“Can I be blamed for doing the one thing that completes me? Answer: Absolutely.”
I think, speaking of Everything’s Eventual, that Dinky Earnshaw is one of my all-time fave King characters, and I was very, very pleased to see him turn up in the last Dark Tower book.
“Well lookit him standing there like the Grand Poobah of Upper Butt Crack…” – Delores Claiborne
“Cancer. Rhymes with ‘dancer’ and ‘you just shit your pants, sir’.” – from Thinner
I can’t hear the word “cancer” without running that quote through my mind. Generally, it’s inappropriate and in poor taste to say it out loud. Too bad, because it always makes me laugh.
You can argue the literary merits of Stephen King’s writing, but the dude has a way with a turn of phrase. There were moments in “Duma Key” where I laughed out loud at some way of phrasing something.
I cannot remember the story, but I’m 99% sure it’s in Different Seasons somewhere:
“Love has teeth. They bite, and the wounds never heal.”
