I just updated some programs that I was alerted to then restarted my computer and now Safari won’t load.
I have tried to open it from the Applications folder. I restarted my compter again for good measure. No luck.
Any ideas?
Thanks

What does it do when you double click it? Nothing? Does it give you the “Unexpectedly Quit” message? Do you get the spinning beach ball?
And last question (promise): are any of the applications you installed supposed to modify your web browser?
OK, that should be long enough for the repost timeout to fade…
I noticed I didn’t actually give you any advice in the previous post. It might be easier to diagnose with the answers to the questions I asked, but here’s a go, anyway.
Mac applications tend to be monolithic (not made up of parts scattered far and wide), so damaged applications can be replaced just by dragging a new copy into the Applications folder. If you’ve got another copy of Safari around (do you backup your Applications folder to an iPod or iDisk?) try double-clicking it to see if it launches. If it works, just replace the broken one with the working version.
If you don’t have backups, you might wander down to an Apple Store and ask them if you can copy it off one of their machines onto a flash drive or CD. There might be a copyright issue here, so be sure to ask, but I don’t know why they’d care. It’s a basic system component – it’s useless without a Mac, and comes with it.
I might have another suggestion, but I have to try it out first…
Have you tried repairing permissions?
Yep. Since you’re posting to the SDMB, I’m assuming you have available either an alternate browser or an alternate machine. Go to Apple’s Support Site and type “Safari” in the search box. You’ll get several options for downloading a new version, which may or may not work for you depending on what OS version you’re running. If you’re lucky enough to be running 10.3 or 10.4.2, you can get Safari directly. If you’re more up to date than that, you’ll probably want to just redownload the last update you did and run it again.
If this doesn’t work, it’s off to ask the Genius at the the Apple store (who will demonstrate his Geniousness by calling HQ and asking them).
Thanks all.
I posted the question using Explorer. But it froze so I couldn’t get back to you.
FTR, when I double clicked it, the screen ‘flashed’ as if it was going to load then nothing.
No “Unexpectedly Quit” 'cause it never started, no beach ball.
I used 9 to get on with Netscape. Then followed the above advice. So up and running again…for now…
Thanks again.
Which advice worked for you? Getting the new copy of Safari?
My friend’s mom is having the same trouble, except it’s not only Safari but also Cocktail and some others that are quitting unexpectedly.
What worked for you?
