Delphi is a RAD system based around Object Pascal (like a “Visual Pascal”, but with full source code for the libraries that actually make everything work behind the scenes, and it’s strong enough to develop the Delphi compiler and IDE in Delphi).
It’s not as popular as C++ or even VB, I suppose, but it’s more robust than VB, compiles a hell of a lot faster than C++, and it has its niche. PowerArchiver and Macromedia HomeSite are written in Delphi.
At this point, I’m leaning towards “hack,” since from your own admission you need Microsoft tools to get your work done. Can’t imagine what would happen if you had to write code using nothing but emacs and gcc.
(And let’s be honest, Visual Basic is a set of Microsoft training wheels. )
Sounds to me like that’s a signal to expand your skills, so you’re not hobbled by being tied to one proprietary platform.
And one that would be asked only by someone who doesn’t know what “standards” means. Hint: It does not mean “Whatever the majority of people are using.”
Because we have to put up with clueless folks like you all the time?
That would be a good argument to not specialize in Macs only. To call a programmer limited to the Microsoft world “hobbled” is a bit of a stretch.
Whatever the actual meaning, in my world, it means “whatever the businesses you deal with are using.” At my last job, we had over 50 clients, all of whom were large lending institutions. (Much of Wall Street included.) None used Macs.
hehheh, thanks for the free pass. You could have easily torn into me. I bow to the cooler head.
Because while gaming is very important to ME (gosh, Y-babe, just think, someone uses their computer for something different than you do!), I recognize that not everyone sees it as much of a Mecca.
I stand by my view of the computer world: PC’s are cheaper and get more bang for their buck. Even the new G5’s don’t whomp on P4’s or Athlons. The only thing Mac’s have left is stability, and that might eventually go the way of the dinosaur, as well… and then Apple will survive solely on the backs of the small percentage of Mac cultists. Ultimately, I see things turning out as this article describes.
I just want to state that if you’re not using your computer, be it PC or Mac, to play computer games, then you’re wasting that machine. Word processors, spread sheets, graphic programs, web design, space shuttle launches… sure, a computer is useful for these things, but if you didn’t buy your computer primarily for Warcraft or Battlefield: 1942, then you might as well have just bought a slide-rule and spiral-bound notebook.

Some of my favorite computer games were for Mac - the Marathon series (from the makers of Halo) and the Escape Velocity series.
I only use a PC now though. Not that there is anything wrong with Macs, but the advantages of using the more popular platform outweigh the negatives in my view.
