One of MAD’s favorite themes was pairing an parody of an old movie cliche with the “updated” version of the story. One was “Going My Way” vs. “Going Way Out”, the latter featuring a new priest who was a counter-culture graduate of the post-Vatican II era. Another was the Knute Rockne story updated to the modern money-driven college football world, and a third was a parody of the old “up and coming boxer has to choose between his sweetheart and his new flame”, paired against a young man having to decide between his “establishment” life and girlfriend and the hippie lifestyle with an acid-dropping free-love flower child.
