Mad Men 2.8: A Night to Remember, Sept 14th '08 (open spoilers)

It seems pretty clear to me that he wasn’t giving Joan a promotion.

My impression as well. When Roger realized she could handle the extra work, I think it was tantamount to saying ‘OK, it’s not a particularly demanding job but necessary nonetheless’. And the $150/week was the whole salary- a raise of $150 a week back then, for Joan’s position, would be unheard of. I think Peggy only made a total starting salary of $35/week or something ridiculous like that.

However, I was surprised to see Joan sent to help Harry, after Roger & Harry’s first conversation ended with Roger saying “figure out a way to do it on your own”. I thought Harry’s request got snubbed.

I thought he said “she” would have to share an office. I’m not doubting it though. I’ll have to re watch that part.

Remember what a big to-do it was for Peggy to be made a writer? If Joan was getting this kind of promotion, it would not have been done so casually, especially with Roger involved.

What I want to know is:

  1. Who’s this “Mitch” that Harry’s having a problem with?

  2. How does Warren get away with not working?

Anybody catch what Betsy got stuck in her foot when she finally dragged herself out of bed at the end?

I think if that priest is trying to “help” Peggy, he’s doing a horrible job of it. She’d be much better off if he just left her alone - including the obnoxious “pro bono” work. I don’t think he likes being a priest very much. I don’t think he’s going to last long in that “marriage” any more than Joan’s going to last in hers. (Joan SAID that was what she wanted, btw - a “career” in the suburbs. I think in the first season. I just think that, partly due to advertising, it’s impossible for her (and a lot of people, not just women) to know what they wanted. And compared to the secretarial job she has, maybe that’s true. But if she could do something that played to strengths more…).

I think it was a piece of broken glass, but I don’t remember seeing any glass breaking, and the floor was carpeted. Odd.

ascenray, yeah, what’s up with Warren? All he does is eat. Maybe he’s related to Cooper.

She had been drinking all day and had left a glass of booze on the carpet next to the bed. She stepped on it and broke it as she was getting up. The crunch of breaking glass was clearly audible.

Ah, that explains it. I thought the glass was already broken when she stepped on it.

I’ve been looking all over for Mitch. Back when Peggy was presenting the Rejuvenator (or whatever they called it), one of the guys joked that “Mitch’s wife would never take it off.” But I’m not finding a Mitch in the credits.

Yeah, I don’t think I’ve heard Betty swear before, but she very distinctly said “Shit!” when that happened (probably the strongest language allowable on AMC).

Anyone else fear for Betty’s sanity? Even more than when she shot the neighbor’s pigeons. Between the early morning intense horseback riding (I don’t think I’ve ever seen her sweaty before, either), desperately going through Don’s clothes and drawers, not taking off the party dress for a day and a half, and demolishing the dining room chair, I’m worried.

Heh, I thought it might have been one of Bobby’s earrings . I didn’t hear the crunch, obviously…

I was worried for awhile but I felt better after she called Don and told him not to come home. I took that as a positive step. It’d be more worrisome if she carried on like nothing was wrong.

The chair scene was powerful. This isn’t worth fixing, I’ll destroy it.
