Mad-Men: 4.07 "The Suitcase" (open spoilers)

Repulsive and annoying??? duh! He killed his fucking DOG - just opened the door and let it out to wander the NYC streets to get hit by a car or starve to death. I am hoping Duck will meet the same fate. Peggy’s previous hooking up with him was like a slap in the face, and she went down several notches (in my book). This episode redeems her somewhat (in my book), how could it not?

This episode was the first time Peggy actually looked PRETTY. Really, really pretty.

Don and Peggy,
Peggy and Don.
Don and Peggy,
Peggy and Don!

Surely this relationship has to be consummated at some point, but I fear that will mark the jumping of the shark for this show…

Yes, I’ve thought that about this show before, but especially this one. So much of it takes place in just that one office space.

Great episode. But I still liked last week’s, too. I just love this show.

In my eyes, the head-turners on the show are Betty and Joan. Jane, Trudy, Allison, Faye, Stephanie, Phoebe, etc. are pretty enough, but right out of the shower, they wouldn’t be any more attractive than Peggy.

Peggy is pretty when she’s animated. She has a lovely voice and is compelling when she speaks – I’m always interested in what she has to say, and if guys were smart, they would be too. And she was downright sultry when she was waking up on the couch, with her hair falling over her eyes.

I think this episode was brilliantly written and acted. I rolled my eyes just a teensy bit when Don had his vision of Anna, but Sepinwall reminded me that this has happened before. It’s not out of character for Don or the writers to be a bit metaphysical. He saw what he needed to see, Anna smiling and moving on.

Anyone else surprised that (apparently) Peggy has been seeing both Duck and Mark? And that she was momentarily considering Duck’s offer, until she realized how pie-in-the-sky it was?

Loved that Peggy still didn’t leave, even when the sun was coming up, and that she admitted how important the office was to her. It’ll be interesting to see how Don reacts to having a real friend. There’s probably some more verbal abuse in Peggy’s future, but she’ll be giving as good as she gets.

Has Peggy seen Duck anytime recently? The last time I remember her with him was on November 22, 1963 (they were in bed in a hotel when JFK was killed), and this episode took place around May 25, 1965 (based on the date of the Liston-Ali fight).

With a suitcase.

Did Duck’s new start-up business with no capital and no customers remind anybody else of the Michael Scott Paper Company?

And no limp!

We haven’t seen them together again on the show, but I assume they’ve been together off screen. He knew it was her birthday, and she wasn’t surprised that he sent a “gift”. He wouldn’t have made that offer if they’d just had a one-night (day?) stand.

I haven’t been to the AMC website this season, to see if there’ve been any extra scenes. I didn’t know that the mousy woman with Mark and the family was Peggy’s roommate. When did she get a new roommate? When did Duck fall off the wagon? Why? Maybe there’s some stuff at the site about Duck and the roommate.

She hasn’t been seeing Duck; she’s been seeing Mark. Duck called up out of the blue after he fell off the wagon and got canned from Grey.

I completely understand her considering Duck’s offer, though. When he’s sober, he’s good, and it’s the same idea that Don & Roger made successful (… thus far). She’s obviously frustrated with Don’s erratic behavior and performance, too.

Am I misremembering, or was the Samsonite + Joe Nameth a real-life commercial at some point? It certainly seemed a better idea than Don’s goofy Samsonite TKO idea which Peggy accurately criticized until Don pouted. Unfortunately the Joe Nameth idea seems to have been New Short Guy’s…

Does she have a prosthetic leg in real life? I remember her as a Russian woman from The Sopranos, whose leg is stolen by Tony’s sister.

Are you thinking of Liliana from the Sopranos? They’re played by different actresses. Liliana was played by Katalin Pota, Anna is played by Melinda Page Hamilton.

And a really bad yellow dress. You’d think she’d at least get a great wardrobe in the hereafter.

I found the episode a bit of a let down, although it had its moments. I hate “ghost saying goodbye” scenes in things.

Don missing that punch was one of the funniest things I have ever seen.

Twenty four years of watching TV has conditioned me to expect that punch to land. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a main character on TV so utterly not save the day when the moment called for it.

Likewise. On one hand, it’s a shame not to see Duck get punched. On the other, it would have been too cliché to see Don knock him out for being an asshole to Peggy.

Good luck with that ad firm, Duck!

Even in his “better” moments, I’ve always found Duck utterly repulsive. It was hard for me to get worked up over stuff like him murdering his dog or his behavior in this episode because his base level for me is already set to “utterly vile.”

I assume that he fell completely off the wagon not long after his machinations to run Sterling Cooper blew up in his face because of Don not having a contract. We also know that his plan to bring Peggy and Pete over to Grey (or wherever; I can’t remember) failed, and that his performance was poor enough to get him fired. He is loathsome and I’m only interested in seeing him again in the context of some horrible death. My esteem for Peggy dropped extraordinarily when she slept with him.

I continue to be impressed by the way this season explores the actual consequences of being Don Draper. I thought Don drunk to the point of stumbling and vomiting was a vivid counterpoint to something like Don and Betty getting drunk and falling asleep on their bed, in their clothes a couple seasons ago. The alcoholism talk is perhaps a bit blatant, but I’m impressed that the show isn’t pulling any punches in showing us that Don has been a liar, a cad, and an alcoholic for years, and this is what that looks like. A lesser show would have kept him the mysterious James Bond of the advertising world we met in season 1.

Damn! Coulda sworn it was the same person.

Yeah, I never liked the guy a bit. This episode just clinched it.

I hate Duck but I wouldn’t go so far as to say he “murdered” his dog.

It’s NYC… Someone would have found him and either taken him in or taken him to the humane society. I’m pretty sure the dog was used to the city, too, so he probably wouldn’t run into traffic. Also, “murder” is defined as one human killing a human with"malice aforethought" or with intent but without deliberation or premeditation. I can’t apply that to what Duck did. At worst, he committed Negligent Dogslaughter (also a great band name).

Great episode. Loved Don’s line in the diner, “I want to go to Greece. I heard all the good cooks stayed there.”

That crew in the restaurant with the boyfriend, Peggy’s family made me laugh. They all looked like they stepped right out of a Gary Larson comic strip. All they needed was a fat kid with a brush cut, glasses, and buck teeth.

Can you say ‘shit’ on TV now? Don used it. I’ve heard a crapload of 'crap’s on TV over the years, but not ‘shit’.
